This research will assist the built environment professions and their clients to make better decisions about new developments through a novel 'learning by doing' approach. Used successfully in other fields such as natural resource management, this idea will capitalise on the large number of asset investments undertaken to benchmark original stakeholder intentions and aspirations against the reality of current performance. Decisions will be re-evaluated in the context of contemporary economic, social and environmental criteria to enable existing multi-criteria models to deliver more sustainable outcomes that are also feasible and in the national interest, and consequently minimise the industry's current exposure to future climate change.Read moreRead less
The challenge to member based organisations and their responses. The project will explore participants' construction of the meaning of membership in member based organisations (MBOs), and will carry out comparative analysis of MBOs' responses to membership decline, to identify common challenges and innovative responses. The project will explore participants' construction of the meaning of membership in member based organisations (MBOs), and will carry out comparative analysis of MBOs' responses to membership decline, to identify common challenges and innovative responses. This will enhance Industry Partners' knowledge of members' motivations, and disincentives to membership, and outline examples of good practice in other fields. The results will offer practical strategies for improved member recruitment and retention in MBOs, which continue to play a significant role in Australian economic and social life. The research will make significant contributions to existing bodies of social capital and voluntary association theory.Read moreRead less

Manufacture of optical thin film coatings is a difficult and generally inefficient process undertaken within a vacuum chamber. There are many variables which are not easily controlled nor understood in these complex thermodynamic environments. This project aims to advance core knowledge in three critical areas namely an improved understanding of ion beam physics, new knowledge of the thermodynamic environment used in physical vapour deposition of thin films and new knowedge in the application of Ion beam Technology to optical thin film growth and characteristics.
This project is significant, developing core knowledge and understanding with potential to lead to process efficiency gains, improved optical film characteristics and accessing new areas of research (rf/photoic devices). This project will advance the current state of art in the field of Ion Beam Technology and Ion Beam assisted physical vapour deposition.

This research will develop a method for modelling the energy embodied in individual commercial building construction. Construction material manufacturing emissions are well known in most industries, but the total embodied energy of the construction supply chain is difficult to model for individual buildings. For efficient commercial buildings, the embodied energy can represent up to 40 years of operational energy. The results will be used to develop cost effective strategies for optimising the total life cycle energy of individual commercial buildings. This will in part improve the environmental performance of the Australian construction industry.Read moreRead less

The specific aim of this research is to improve on current approaches to risk identification and allocation during the bidding process for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for infrastructure projects. This research will contribute to the strategic development of public-private procurement policies which have the full confidence of the primary stakeholders and assist governments in the selection of alternative 'public' or 'private' mechanisms for the provision of infrastructure facilities. This is essential if broader questions related to economic issues are to be addressed. A specific research outcome will be the minimisation of transaction costs incurred during the bidding process.Read moreRead less
Prediction and measurement of transmission error in a rear axle differential and its relationship to vehicle noise. Noise and vibration of vehicles is an important consideration for both performance efficiency and passenger comfort. Gear noise is a significant contributor to NVH of vehicles. Gear transmission error is recognised as the main source of gear drive vibration. This proposal involves the prediction and measurement of gear transmission error of a rear axle differential. A second important component is to investigate the effect of various vehicle parameters and operating conditions such as speed, load and power on the noise produced for a given TE. The successful outcomes will result in great economic benefit to Australia's automotive and manufacturing industry.Read moreRead less
Development of Low Cost, High Quality Nitrides for Solid-State Lighting and Other Power Saving Applications. Incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are inefficient light sources and their replacement with high efficiency solid state LED lighting over the next 10 years will provide a 10% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. The development and enhancement of a recent Australian innovation for the fabrication of low cost high brightness LEDs will enable Australia to be at the frontier of this technology and to be a world leader in the next stage of its development.Read moreRead less
The Characterisation of Fires in Tunnels. A series of 22 fires ranging from 2 megawatt up to 20 megawatt intensity will be set under controlled conditions in unused tunnel facilities, in New South Wales. Instrumentation in the tunnel, donated by the State Rail Authority of New South Wales, will monitor the movement of particulates (smoke). This information is vital to tunnel design, and for passenger life safety. This information will be applicable to all tunnels worldwide.

As a multi-disciplinary team of materials-, isotope-tracing- and medical-experts, we aim to understand and monitor wear debris in prostheses. Knee replacement surgery alone imposes a high burden of annually half a billion dollars on the Australian health budget. Controlling and reducing wear debris in prosthesis joints would reduce these costs and improve patients' quality of life.Read moreRead less

The continents have been rifted, or broken up, and collided, or re-assembled, along major zones of weakness many times throughout Earth's history. Boundaries between such continental domains focus large-scale movements of fluids that can produce giant ore deposits. This study will provide new perspectives on the localisation of world-class economic deposits, the Earth resources on which society depends. Innovations in imaging the deep Earth beneath continents, and in numerical modelling, will maintain our high international profile in research relevant to National Priority 1.6 (Developing Deep Earth Resources). Unique 3D geological maps of regions down to 250km will make the composition of deep Earth regions newly accessible to geoscientists and all potential endusers.Read moreRead less
