The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

There can be no doubt that protecting Australia's borders from the dual threats of terrorism and illicit drugs is of paramount importance to continuation of our well-being and way of life. Our chemical sensors are simple hand-held or remote chemical listening sensors, which will have the ability to sense the presence of characteristic chemical vapours associated with explosives and illicit drugs. The simplicity and low cost of the chemical listening allows for installation at key locations -e.g. transport hubs, shipping containers, airports etc as well as placement within clandestine drug laboratories.Read moreRead less

Strategies for the detection of designer steroids in greyhounds. This project aims to develop strategies to detect designer steroids in racing greyhounds to safeguard industry integrity and animal welfare. These strategies include in vivo and comparative in vitro studies of steroid metabolism, mass-spectrometric elucidation of metabolite structures, and synthesis of putative steroid metabolites with different stereochemistries and oxidation patterns as reference materials. This project will use major metabolites identified by these studies to develop analytical procedures to test for drug abuse at greyhound race meetings. The project will target twelve readily available designer steroid supplements that have significant risk of abuse.Read moreRead less
Synthesis of chemically well-defined and biocompatible oligopyrroles for tissue engineering applications. Modern methods of synthesis will be used to prepare chemically well-defined and structurally novel materials capable of facilitating the regeneration of damaged nerves and bone structures. This should lead to new means for treating degenerative diseases and major injuries, events that impact on hundreds of thousands of Australians each year.
Synthetic compounds to specifically activate or inhibit ryanodine receptor calcium ion channels. The aim of the project is develop synthetic compounds that specifically and reversibly activate or inhibit ryanodine receptor calcium release channels, and will thus increase or reduce the force developed by skeletal muscle and the heart. The compounds will be useful in biomedical and veterinary sciences and in the livestock industry. Some of the compounds that are not effective on mammalian ryan ....Synthetic compounds to specifically activate or inhibit ryanodine receptor calcium ion channels. Some of the compounds that are not effective on mammalian ryandine receptor isoforms might interact with insect channels and provide a template for a new class of insecticides. The compounds will be based on naturally occurring peptides which specifically and reversibly modulate mammalian calcium channels.Read moreRead less
Synthesis and Analysis of Canine Anabolic Steroid Metabolites. The Australian racing industry is a major driver of economic activity. In NSW, racing is estimated to contribute $1,000 million to GDP, $151 million to Government revenue and provide 50,000 jobs. The future security and prosperity of the racing industry depends on maintaining the highest standards of integrity in the public eye, and this in turn depends on the enforcement of regulations relating to illicit substances. The future security and prosperity of the racing industry depends on maintaining the highest standards of integrity in the public eye, and this in turn depends on the enforcement of regulations relating to illicit substances. The outcome of this project will be the introduction of robust methods of analysis for potential drug abuse in greyhound racing that will position Australia as a world leader in the field.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is the identification of new classes of agrochemicals with better pest resistance and environmental profiles. The proposed partnership with a major international chemical manufacturing organization will allow access to state-of-the-art techniques for the screening and development of novel compounds as agents for the control of pests that affect many major agricultural crops relevant to Australia's economy. Australian graduate students will experience the operations of one of the world's biggest chemical manufacturers. The derivation of agrochemicals from marine sources will promote further recognition of the value of marine ecosystems around Australia.Read moreRead less
Development of Chemoenzymatic Methods for the Selective Elaboration of Polyfunctionalised Therapeutic Agents to Oligomers with Improved Efficacy. The aims of the project are to screen a novel collection of genetically engineered enzymes for their capacity to selectively manipulate proven therapeutic agents so that, ultimately, much more potent polymeric derivatives of the agent/drug can be obtained. The aims of the project are to screen a novel collection of genetically engineered enzymes for their capacity to selectively manipulate proven therapeutic agents so that, ultimately, much more potent polymeric derivatives of the agent/drug can be obtained. The combined use of enzyme libraries and chemical manipulations to generate more powerful polymeric variants of already established drugs has never been undertaken previously in Australia. This approach has the capacity to generate hitherto inaccessible classes of therapeutic entities and to provide a new and unique technology platform for the country's biotechnology industry.Read moreRead less
Chemical Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Analogues of Platencin, a New-generation Antibiotic. The just discovered natural product platencin displays potent and broad spectrum anti-bacterial activity. It may represent the precursor of a new class of drugs to replace current anti-infective agents which are becoming alarmingly less effective as bacterial resistance increases dramatically. For this reason, platencin has been described as a once in a generation discovery. This study will exploit two sophisticated new synthetic techniques for the purposes of making analogues of platencin that will be screened by the industry partner, Biota, for anti-bacterial properties. New drug candidates capable of treating especially dangerous infections such as methicillin resistant staphyllococcus aureus (MRSA) should thus emerge.Read moreRead less

Dendritic molecules incorporating multiple copies of a particular functional group on their periphery allow for attachment of drug-like molecules at each of these sites. The resulting conjugates often have vastly superior therapeutic properties relative to the original single drug molecule. This phenomenon is now revolutionizing drug design. Developments in this area are limited by the range of dendritic molecules currently available. Thus, lack of variation in the three-dimensional architecture and the functionality available at the periphery of such constructs is a serious deficiency. This proposal seeks to redress this through the application of novel chemoenzymatic methods developed by the applicant.Read moreRead less

Asthma represents one of Australia's most significant chronic disease states. It adversely affects the lives of many hundreds of thousands of citizens and represents a growing problem, especially amongst younger members of the population. The start-up biotech company Cryptopharma has recently identified a family of steroid derivatives that deliver, through a novel mode of action, significant anti-asthma activity in in-vivo models. The purpose of the present work is to develop, through comprehensive synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry-type studies, non-steroidal analogues of Cryptopharma's lead compound that can be used clinically in the treatment of asthma.Read moreRead less
