Data-Driven Multistage Robust Optimization—the New Frontier in Optimization. Robust optimisation is a powerful technology for decision-making in uncertain environments. Yet, developing numerically certifiable optimisation principles and data-driven methods that can be readily implemented by common computer algorithms remains an elusive goal for multistage robust optimisation. But it is crucial for the practical use of multistage optimisation. This project aims to develop this novel mathematical theory and methods by extending the investigators' recent award winning advances, including the von Neumann-prizewinning Lasserre-hierarchy approach. Results will provide a foundation and technologies for making superior decisions in the pervasive presence of big data uncertainty, enhancing data-driven innovation in Australia

Decentralisation and robustness for practical control of complex systems. This project aims to develop the theory and tools to address the control of complex interconnected systems. There is currently an enormous disconnect in decentralised control between the celebrated theoretical advances and the concepts that are used for implementation, or even for computation. The project expects to isolate the key reasons for this disconnect and develop ways to address the control of complex interconnected systems. The expected outcome is a tool which can observe information from only a small portion of a network but which may ultimately effect a large portion of the network. This includes smart building management, multi-vehicle systems and convoys, irrigation networks, large array telescopes, and the power distribution grid.

Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment And Facilities - Grant ID: LE110100094

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $300,000.00
    Summary
Selective laser melting - an advanced manufacturing and physical modelling technology for the digital age. Selective laser melting is a new manufacturing technology that creates parts layer by layer directly from a computer model, eliminating the need for tooling or machining. This technology will be applied to a diverse range of research areas from producing the next generation of medical implants and devices to improving our understanding of geo-materials.
