    Using Mathematics to Maximize the Efficiency of Shared Infrastructure in Australia's Coal Export Supply Chain. Port Waratah Coal Services operates the world's largest coal export terminal, servicing about 14 coal mining companies in the Hunter Valley, NSW. It is responsible for around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. The coal supply chain is a complex operation, hampered by bottlenecks in critical shared infrastructure. Such limitations are estimated to cost Australia about $2 .... Using Mathematics to Maximize the Efficiency of Shared Infrastructure in Australia's Coal Export Supply Chain. Port Waratah Coal Services operates the world's largest coal export terminal, servicing about 14 coal mining companies in the Hunter Valley, NSW. It is responsible for around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. The coal supply chain is a complex operation, hampered by bottlenecks in critical shared infrastructure. Such limitations are estimated to cost Australia about $2 billion pa in lost sales. This project will support the design of new infrastructure and processes to ensure an efficient supply chain. The new science resulting will benefit other coal operations in Australia, and potentially other bulk goods supply chains.

    Development of the applications of signal processing to mechanical problems and machine diagnostics. It is intended to extend research collaboration in the following areas of interest to both UTC and UNSW: (1) Dynamics of gears for diagnostics and noise control (2) Application of blind source separation techniques to mechanical problems (3) Application of cyclostationary signal analysis techniques to machine diagnostics (4) Determination of structural dynamic properties from response measure .... Development of the applications of signal processing to mechanical problems and machine diagnostics. It is intended to extend research collaboration in the following areas of interest to both UTC and UNSW: (1) Dynamics of gears for diagnostics and noise control (2) Application of blind source separation techniques to mechanical problems (3) Application of cyclostationary signal analysis techniques to machine diagnostics (4) Determination of structural dynamic properties from response measurements (5) Diagnostics of diesel engines and other reciprocating machines. This project will result in the publication of joint papers in each of these topics, and give material to form the basis of an application for at least one FAIR project in the area of gear noise control and diagnostics.

    Dynamic behaviour of foams. Foam flow occurs in many industrial processes such as the fractionation of proteins and coal flotation. The proposed research will investigate transient behaviour at start-up of such processes and how the method of foam production affects process efficiency. The dispersion of liquid tracers in foam and a newly discovered phenomenon of ?upwards rippling? will be studied as it is likely that these could illuminate the physical processes that lay behind foam flow. Blast furnace ironmaking is a key operation in the steel industry which, with an annual turnover around $11 billion, is a significant manufacturing sector in Australia. This project, focused on the behaviour of liquid iron and slag, can generate computer models that can reliably describe the complicated multiphase flow and thermochemical processes in the furnace. Blast furnace ironmaking is a key operation in the steel industry which, with an annual turnover around $11 billion, is a significant manufacturing sector in Australia. This project, focused on the behaviour of liquid iron and slag, can generate computer models that can reliably describe the complicated multiphase flow and thermochemical processes in the furnace. The implementation of the resultant models and the new understanding should lead to long life campaigns, better operational control, decreased fuel consumption, improved productivity and reduced environmental impact. This, together with the proposed research training, is important to the development of Australia's competitive steel industry.
