A Platform for Rapid and Flexible Development of Context-Aware Web Services. Context awareness is one of the most exciting trends in computing today, and it holds the potential to make our daily life more productive, convenient and enjoyable. The proposed project will produce a comprehensive platform for developing context-aware Web services, which will facilitate ready implementation of many innovative applications and make important contributions to Australian society and the national economy. One such application is an intelligent seniors assistance service that will improve quality of life for senior citizens while helping them maintain an independent lifestyle. This project will also place Australia at the forefront of Web service development.

The aim of this research project is to develop a global decision support system (GDSS) in order to assist SMEs to improve their competitiveness in the dynamic global market while providing an industry oriented research training for a high calibre PhD student, who would be a valuable asset to Australia. The GDSS will help SMEs leverage their operations in a global context and to adopt a realistic virtual manufacturing system in the future. The significance of the project includes developing a new methodology and a GDSS to assess virtual manufacturing issues for SMEs and assisting them making timely decisions.

Continuous process improvement through workstation feedback for General Practice medicine using experts-in-the-loop data mining. This project investigates the iterative use of data mining results to allow experts to construct feedback to influence subsequent production work. We explore the problem in the context of General Practice medicine by having General Practitioners (GPs) review emerging patterns from their own practice's electronic medical records and author feedback to discourage undesirable patterns. The work will have immediate applicability to medical practice and will drive innovation in data mining method, notably for efficient identification of temporal and complex niche patterns. More broadly, the work will extend the way data mining is used to create new expectations of workstation behaviour.

Duality, singular perturbations and numerical analysis in infinite dimensional linear programming problems related to problems of control of nonlinear dynamical systems. Problems of control of nonlinear dynamical systems attract continued interest of eminent researchers motivated by important applications and by the fact that analytical and/or numerical analysis of a general nonlinear control problem presents a challenging task. The outcomes of the project will be both fundamental theoretical results and readily applicable (linear programming based) algorithms that will equip researchers and engineers with new tools for analysis and numerical solution of nonlinear control problems (including problems that have been intractable so far). The project will further enhance Australia's international reputation in Control Theory and its Applications.

Integrated, interactive and systematic Marine Protected Area design for sustainability of South Australian marine environments: A GIS-based, spatial optimisation approach. This project aims to enhance MPA design in SA by integrating systematic conservation plannning (SCP), spatial optimisation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). New, integrated Integer Programming (IP) models will be built based on established SCP principles and nationally agreed marine conservation criteria. The IP models .... The IP models will be tightly coupled with the GIS to create an interactive Spatial Decision Support Tool (SDSS) for systematic MPA design - the first of its kind. The SDSS will enable real-time, systematic MPA design and will provide flexible design options for a comprehensive, adequate, representative and efficient MPA system for SA.

This project will benefit Australia's scientific knowledge and technology base in the areas of evolutionary computation, business intelligence, and decision management. The outcomes will advance Australian companies and organisations, as many common yet complex business problems can be better addressed with systems that automatically learn and adapt to environmental changes. Such complex business problems include dynamic scheduling (in the manufacturing sector), resource allocation optimisation (in the defence, mining, and agriculture sectors), and network design optimisation (in the telecommunications and energy sectors).
