Summary
Antibodies represent a key component of the immune system, and a particularly important in defence against bacterial and viral infections. In some individuals, antibody production fails, rendering them more susceptible to infection. In most cases, the mechanism of antibody failure is unknown. This project seeks to determine the genetic and cellular mechanisms of antibody failure. This could improve diagnosis for immune deficiency, and improve our overall understanding of the immune system.

We know very little of the genes that control development of the ovary in female fetuses; most study has focused on the formation of the testis in males. We will use a novel experimental model, a marsupial, where by hormonal treatment of developing males we can switch off testis formation and activate the ovarian pathway. Summary
Hypospadias, a failure of the correct formation of the penis, is the second-most common birth defect, occurring in around 1% of boys. It causes distress to both newborn and parents, requiring surgical intervention, and is a burden of cost and is a risk to the child. Furthermore, it is frequently associated with other abnormalities. We have a novel model in which we can induce penis abnormalities and define the link between hormonal exposures and defective penis differentiation.

Summary
Levels of abdominal fat are closely correlated with metabolic syndrome. We propose experiments to identify unique characteristics (neurotransmitters or receptors) of neurons deep in the brain that project specifically to this type of fat or other less harmful subcutaneous fat. We can then test the functional significance of these unique elements in animal experimets involving gene knockdown or pharmacological approaches to modify their function and test the effect on fat distribution
