Summary
We will use ocular motor technology to investigate motor dysfunction in autism and Asperger's disorder, to advance our understanding of the neurobiological bases of these disorders. This will help clarify whether neural networks are differentially disrupted in these disorders, as our previous clinical research suggests. This dissociation and the subsequent development of an ocular motor clincal screen may improve diagnosis, and potentially treatment, of these devastating conditions.

Summary
Melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the commonest ocular malignancies in adults. While plaque brachytherapy has delivered advances in ocular cancer management, significant challenges remain. These include post-treatment vision loss (due to over irradiation of vital structures, e.g. optic nerve), treatment failure (~10%) and an inability to treat large tumours (>8mm thick). This project aims to address these challenges through rigorous quality assurance and enhanced dosimetry planning.

Worldwide, 125 million people correct their vision through the use of contact lenses. Contact lens use predisposes the wearer to sight threatening eye infections. Despite advanced material technology and improved hygiene regimens, the rate of contact lens-related infectious disease has remained constant. This research aims to elucidate how bacteria compromise the ocular immune system in order to develop preventative/therapeutic strategies to combat ocular infections.

People with motor neurone disease experience devastating deterioration in movement, communication, swallowing and ultimately breathing. Research is required to determine if the advance care planning (ACP) process for people with MND is impacted by communication impairment. This study will build evidence to improve the ACP process for this vulnerable patient group. It also aims to investigate the impact communication impairment has on caregivers’ quality of life in order to improve carer support.

While the brain lesion is static, the musculoskeletal problems are progressive and require lifelong management (cost of US$946,000 over life per person). The broad aim of this project is: This population based cohort study (n - 240) aims to determine the pathway to motor outcome from diagnosis at 18 months to 5 years based on the nature of the brain injury at 24 months (structural MRI of the nature, location and timing of the brain lesion). Secondary Aims: Determine the rate of musculoskeletal deformity (hip displacement, spasticity, muscle contracture). Potential impact of medical co-morbidities (nutrition, epilepsy, respiratory problems) Patterns of participation and HRQOL. Patterns of medical resource use: treatment costs and outcomes. This study will: Allow clinicians to better the likely functional outcomes of children with CP from an earlier age based on the rate and limit of gross motor development and nature and severity of the brain lesion, determine the nature and timing of physical deformities to aid prevention and treatment; provide information on resource use for future planning and organisation of medical and therapy services. This in turn will give more accurate prognostic counseling as well as target areas for early therapy. Our multidisciplinary research group is uniquely placed to conduct this world-first study with access to two entire birth years of children linked to our Victorian Cerebral Palsy Register. Summary
Diabetic retinopathy, a frequent complication of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, is the commonest cause of blindness in working age individuals. Prior to the growth of blindness-causing new vessels in the eye we now know that there is a gradual loss of neurons in the retina. This project will investigate whether the resident immune cells in the retina, which are normally neuroprotective, become neurotoxic during episodes of systemic inflammation (e.g. bacterial or viral infections).
