THE PEOPLE ENGAGE IN POLITICAL LIFE: THE NINETEENTH CENTURY AMERICAN STORY. The project asks how, and whether, a democratic theory arising from a politics of rural localism retained meaning for citizens in very different social settings. Understanding how political identities were created in the past may help us identify ways to increase the saliency of politics in ordinary lives today.

Scholarly Editions of James Hogg's The Three Perils of Man and Edinburgh periodical writings and Walter Scott's miscellaneous short stories. This project will add significantly to scholarly knowledge of James Hogg, now recognised as one of the most important nineteenth century Scottish writers, and of his better known contemporary Walter Scott. The exciting and very recent discovery of the original manuscript of Hogg's most ambitious novel, The Three Perils of Man, the inclusion of Scott's final ....Scholarly Editions of James Hogg's The Three Perils of Man and Edinburgh periodical writings and Walter Scott's miscellaneous short stories. This project will add significantly to scholarly knowledge of James Hogg, now recognised as one of the most important nineteenth century Scottish writers, and of his better known contemporary Walter Scott. The exciting and very recent discovery of the original manuscript of Hogg's most ambitious novel, The Three Perils of Man, the inclusion of Scott's final, unpublished novella and the addition of a volume of Hogg's periodical writings have meant a major expansion of work already underway. This project aims to examine texts authored by French-speaking migrants to Australia in order to explore how migrating subjects write their identity, how migrants represent the self between nations and between languages, and how Australia is viewed through the prism of another language. By mapping the active construction of social landscapes by different groups in the same place, this project illuminates the webs of attachment between people, place and identity during periods of upheaval and change. Yet they are the highest users of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). Based on an empirically grounded analysis in a rich qualitative data set revealing how young Australians see themselves negotiating family, work and citizenship, the project will construct the vocabularies by which young people locate themselves in the community.
