2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

    Summary
    Skeletal structure is continually modified throughout life to take into account dietary, hormonal and physical changes. This is brought about by three major cell types which either form bone, destroy bone, or sense mechanical and hormonal influences on the skeleton. My work seeks to understand the way these cells are controlled and how they control each other. In this way, I will identify new ways of treating osteoporosis, arthritis, skeletal birth defects and cancer-induced bone disease.

    Developing And Applying Statistical Genetics Methods To Identify Genes, Molecular Biomarkers And Environmental Agents That Causally Affect Risk Of Complex Musculoskeletal Diseases

    My aim is to identify genes, biological molecules and environmental factors that causally affect risk of osteoporosis and ankylosing spondylitis (a form of autoimmune arthritis) using novel and existing statistical genetics methodologies. My research will advance understanding of the causes of these diseases, identify new opportunities for their treatment, and provide the scientific community with new statistical methods and software to identify factors that causally influence risk of disease.

    Summary
    There is currently a steady increase in surgical intervention and rehabilitation therapy for bone related fractures due to trauma or osteoporosis as a consequence of an aging population. Bone regeneration involves the coordinated participation of skeletal precursor cells, blood vessels and immune cells recruited from the surrounding tissues. This proposal examines the mechanisms mediating the maintenance and recruitment of skeletal precursor cells to sites of bone damage.

    My research has shown that vitamin A is very important to the normal function of blood and bone cells. I will further explore the uses of vitamin A products to improve the treatment of patients with a range of different blood and bone diseases. These studies may lead to better treatments of patients with a wide range of blood cell diseases. It may also reveal better treatments for patients with bone diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis.

    This work aims to find safe and more effective obesity treatments for the over 2.1 billion people worldwide with overweight or obesity. Severely energy restricted diets are currently the most effective dietary obesity treatment, but these are underutilized due to concerns about potential harms. This work will investigate using severe diets intermittently rather than continuously, as a means of enhancing their benefits of long-term weight/fat loss while also reducing potential harmful effects.

    Bone Growth For Healthy Development: Physiology, Pathophysiology, And Regeneration

    Summary
    Musculoskeletal damage is a major burden on individuals and our health care system. My research program will focus on improving bone health in three important areas: (1) children’s growth plate injury and growth defects; (2) bone loss and bone marrow defects from cancer chemotherapy; (3) ensuring that bone grows healthily in early life. The overall intent of this research is to develop new therapies when bone doesn’t grow well, or is damaged.
