Understanding meal patterns: developing the evidence-base for nutrition messages. Little is known about the format, structure or context of meal patterns despite their importance for health. This project will examine the predictors of meal patterns of Australians. This will provide new information which will facilitate the design of more effective ways to communicate with consumers about healthy eating.
Food supply, diet and membrane lipids and the determination of metabolic rate. There are two types of polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6), which are both essential in the diet. This project will examine whether our current diet has a good balance of these two classes of fatty acids. It will examine the hypothesis that we do not have enough omega-3 polyunsaturates in our modern diet and that this imbalance has important consequences for metabolism and health. While authoritative health agencies in Western countries recommend increased intake of omega-3 fats, fish stocks world-wide are already under stress and could not sustain the general uptake of this advice. Nor could aquaculture expansion meet the demand for omega-3 fats with current practices of using wild fish or fish meal or fish oil for feed. Current interventions to promote healthy weight-related behaviours among young people ignore the motivators and barriers unique to demographic sub-groups, and are largely ineffective. An epigenetic basis for foetal programming. The social and economic impact of adult-onset diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis is increasing. Evidence indicates that a mother's nutrition influences the risk of her children developing some diseases later in life. This proposal aims to elucidate the mechanism underlying this phenomenon.
