Valuing News: Aligning Individual, Institutional and Societal Perspectives. This project aims to identify the links between the preparedness of individuals to pay for news, the value of news brands and organisational cultures of news publishers, and the social value of news in promoting a democratic public sphere. Its significance arises with the ongoing crisis of news media business models, which is raising new questions about the future of journalism, and the changing role of governments worldwide in financing news production. Its expected outcomes include advancing debates about how to support public interest journalism, and the value of news as both a commodity and a public good. It will be of benefit to industry, policymakers and the community in addressing the prospects for Australian journalism.

The rise of mistrust: Digital platforms and trust in news media. This project aims to investigate how trust and mistrust in news changes audiences’ behaviours as they increasingly access news through digital platforms. This project aims to investigate how trust and mistrust in news changes audiences’ behaviours as they increasingly access news through digital platforms. Observing the global crisis of trust, the project will undertake a longitudinal analysis of trust and mistrust in news, a four-country experiment that links trust and audience responses, and an in-depth qualitative study that provides specific contexts of these choices. The research will directly benefit policy makers, as it addresses questions of how to better secure trustworthy news content in an age of increasing dominance of digital platforms that algorithmically sort the range of news available to the Australian public.

Mediated Trust: Ideas, Interests, Institutions, Futures. Declining trust in social and political institutions is linked to the rise of populism, misinformation and civic disengagement. Acknowledging the key role of digital media in enabling trust or promoting mistrust, this project explores mediated trust at societal, institutional and interpersonal levels. The research will leverage a novel framework of 'ideas, interests and institutions' applied to major case studies from news media, digital platforms, corporations and the WHO; and develops innovative methods for analysing the relationship between communications and trust. These will deliver world-first integrative approaches for Australian policymakers, industry and regulators to address both crises of trust and our digital futures.

The project aims to design a search engine that monitors and retrieves over multiple social media and micro-blogging platforms. The engine presents search results in a personalised continuously updated summary. An inverted index structure systematically captures and provides easy access to all monitored content, including text, linked and relational data. The structure enables a continuous search paradigm that tracks updates on both the content and popularity of search results. This is expected to help organisations and governments track, understand and exploit social media.

How Do Media Campaigns And Tobacco-relevant News Coverage Influence Adolescent And Adult Smoking?

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $411,177.00
    Summary
The study will merge measures of exposure to televised anti-smoking advertising, press coverage about tobacco issues and other tobacco control policies with (a) an annually interviewed cohort of 2,000 adult smokers from 2002-2008 and (b) triennial surveys of smoking among adolescents 1993-2008 (n-150,000). Analysis will determine the role of anti-smoking advertising and tobacco-related press coverage in moving smokers towards quitting and changing adolescent smoking.

This project aims to develop an innovative holistic mathematical model of the vehicle routing problem for a charity-based food rescue and distribution system. Such a model would aim to maximise societal benefits while constraining costs, and would need to take into account the demand profile for donors and receivers, and the equitable distribution of food. The model developed is designed to mathematically represent the system in a consistent framework so as to develop optimisation models and techniques. The project also seeks to understand the factors that influence the demand to donate to food rescue by organisations and individuals and the demand to request food by welfare agencies.
