The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Near Unsupervised Learning for Early Discovery of Novel Patterns: Methods, Scalability and Label Dependability. This project aims to predict the unknown class labels using the existing small number of class labels. The outcomes of the project have direct relevance to the economy, environment, energy and health sectors due to the abundance of data coming out of these areas. For example, if an oncogene, a gene that can cause cancer when mutated can be found using data with only few labels and a la ....Near Unsupervised Learning for Early Discovery of Novel Patterns: Methods, Scalability and Label Dependability. This project aims to predict the unknown class labels using the existing small number of class labels. The outcomes of the project have direct relevance to the economy, environment, energy and health sectors due to the abundance of data coming out of these areas. For example, if an oncogene, a gene that can cause cancer when mutated can be found using data with only few labels and a large amount of unlabelled data, the costs and time needed for lab experimentation can be greatly reduced enabling pharmaceutical companies to develop corresponding medicines quicker. It will not only save more lives but also generates millions of dollars of income.Read moreRead less

Skin cancer has a high incidence in the Australian population. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder that affects a significant proportion of the population worldwide. Both illnesses have genetic roots and can be triggered by environmental factors. We will uncover genetic relationship to disease and their responses to environmental conditions using computational methods and mathematical algorithms that can aid in the determination of function, especially in disease states. Understanding the complex genetic interactions that trigger these illnesses would give great benefits in preventive health care, skin cancer and schizophrenia genetic basis, and may lay the ground for building new methods for "personalized medicine".

Artificial neural networks have been widely applied as universal classifiers in many fields, such as biomedicine. However, misunderstanding of fundamental statistical principles, which can cause misleading findings, has been frequently observed in the literature. This project aims to integrate statistical methodologies in neural networks to provide a unified approach to improve its applicability and efficiency in implementation. The system developed from this proposed cross-disciplinary research will be applied to hospital utilization data (hospital morbidity database, Western Australia) and gene expression data (DNA microarrays databases, Harvard University). This collaborative research will advance the international standard of Australian research communities.

Novel biotechnologies are offering an unprecedented opportunity to understand the genetic basis of cancer development and progression. However, they present us with a challenge; new computational methods and improved mathematical models and algorithms need to be introduced to complement these technologies in the determination of the function of our individual genetic makeup, especially in connection with disease states. The project will deal with research questions and datasets related to some of the highest incidence cancers in Australia. This project will contribute towards the development of new powerful algorithms for pattern recognition for future "personalized" molecular diagnostics methods.Read moreRead less
