Compression of distributed data: bridging the gap between theory and practice. In bushfire and tsunami early warning systems, environmental monitoring and healthcare applications, distributed sensors collect and transmit correlated data. This project will design novel data compression algorithms that exploit this correlation to dramatically increase the performance of existing networks and enable new applications.

Summary
Partitioning and ordering Steiner triple systems. Steiner triple systems are fundamental mathematical objects with many real-world applications. This project will develop deep new insights into these objects, resulting in systems allowing many users to simultaneously use a communication channel, and in schemes for preventing the loss of computer data due to hard disk failures.
Hardware Acceleration for Neural Systems. To really understand how brains work, we need to simulate neural networks of a size similar to that of the human brain (100 billion neurons, 100 trillion connections). Simulating such a network on standard computers in not possible because of its sheer size. Several groups are currently building very expensive and proprietary hardware to solve this, but the output from these projects will not be accessible to other researchers. Simulating such a network on standard computers in not possible because of its sheer size. Several groups are currently building very expensive and proprietary hardware to solve this, but the output from these projects will not be accessible to other researchers. In order to make real progress in neuroscience, many more researchers need to be enabled to participate. To do this, the project will build a system from commercial hardware (FPGAs) that will cost only a few ten thousand dollars and it will make this design and software available for free. The aim of this project is to use computational intelligence in software engineering processes to achieve self-optimising products. Many mobile device users bemoan inadequate battery life, and device size is largely determined by the battery. In addition, information and communications technology uses six per cent of the global electricity production. The expected outputs of this project will be packages of optimisation components that software engineers can incorporate into next generation products: the products analyse their collected usage data, perform what-if analyses, and optimise their configurations accordingly for the next usage period. Hence, the products may respond faster, be more reliable, and consume less energy.Read moreRead less
Tracing nature's template: using statistical machine learning to evolve biocatalysts. In this project new computational methods will be developed to design nature-inspired, biological catalysts for industrial purposes. Such methods will enable catalysts to be designed that can improve the effectiveness and environmental footprint of drug development, agricultural and specialist chemical production and environmental remediation.
Advanced planning systems for vertically integrated supply chain management. This project will integrate various algorithms into an adaptive, dynamic and intelligent system that deals with the vertically integrated supply chains. The outcomes include publications in the quality outlets, generation of intellectual property, and dissemination of this research amongst the research and business communities.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming society but standard technologies come with significant hidden costs: training even a single, common, learning model can emit 5 times more carbon dioxide than the lifetime emissions of the average car. This Fellowship aims to develop artificial intelligence platforms using Australia’s significant investment in quantum technologies to bypass traditional approaches to AI. The expected outcomes are neuromorphic computers that operate efficiently—with low-energy cost—and rapidly—achieving speeds impossible with conventional electronic approaches. The anticipated benefits are transformative technologies for AI, new applications across society, and new tools for exploring brain function and cognition.Read moreRead less

Genetic Programming for Big Data Analytics. The project aims to extend a powerful machine learning method, called genetic programming and also developing a new concept called Alpha program, for big data analytics. The project aims to extend a powerful machine learning method, called genetic programming and also developing a new concept called Alpha program, for big data analytics. This project expects to generate a new approach by finding a systematic approach to develop gene structures using information theory. By borrowing the best genes from the population of programs, the Alpha program concept will be developed for the first time. The proposed approach aims to enhance genetic programming for many practical problems. I contend that not only finding better tools for big data analytics is in the best interest of machine learning and big data communities, it also provides significant benefits for other communities and industries in Australia.Read moreRead less
Mechanisms of learning at the interface between perception and action. Using the latest in brain imaging and simulator technology, this project will advance understanding of how experience shapes the visual centres of our brain. It will also support partnerships with construction, mining and health services by developing real and virtual machine interfaces and tools to enhance the outcome of simulator-based training.

The Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function will address one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century to understand how the brain works. We will investigate complex functions such as attention, prediction and decision-making, which require the coordination of information processing by many areas of the brain. This will require a highly collaborative approach involving neurobiologists, cognitive scientists, engineers and physicists, allowing us to translate our discoveries into novel technologies for the social and economic benefit of all Australians. We will also train a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers, and contribute our expertise to a range of public education and awareness programs.Read moreRead less
