    Greek & Italian Residents With Dementia In Aged Care: Language Use, Psychiatric Medication,quaity Of Life & Satisfaction

    Australia has a growing older migrant population and rates of dementia in residential care are high. Communication difficulties for older persons with limited English language proficiency and dementia provide a particular challenge in terms of meeting care needs effectively in residential settings. The study wi .... Australia has a growing older migrant population and rates of dementia in residential care are high. Communication difficulties for older persons with limited English language proficiency and dementia provide a particular challenge in terms of meeting care needs effectively in residential settings. The current project will compare older Greek and Italian background persons with dementia who are residing in either mainstream or ethno-specific residential care facilities in Melbourne. The study will extend our pilot research, which focused on language use, and will also measure a number of factors that may influence the rate of communication, including prescribed psychiatric medication, language proficiency, cognitive impairment and behavioural-psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, the project will compare factors that may differ between the facility types, to provide further understanding of services offered. Furthermore, measures of satisfaction with the facility and quality of life will be included to provide an indication of the clinical significance of residing in a mainstream or ethno-specific aged care facility. The expected outcome of the study is to provide additional data in a very under researched and increasingly important field, to inform policy and practice, with the aim of improving the quality of life for older persons from diverse backgrounds in residential care.

    The trial aims to lower the numbers of children with poor expressive language skills at ages 2 and 3 years, through a sustainable early language promotion program linked to the universal Victorian Maternal and Child Health (M and CH) service, attended by more than 75% of Victorian children at 12 months of age. The trial targets the 20% of toddlers most at risk of expressive language delay, by virtue of having limited or no spoken vocabulary at 18 months of age. It also aims to lower the numbers ....     Novel Probiotics And Naturally-sourced Extracts As Treatment Strategies For Chemotherapy-induced

    Intestinal mucositis is a serious disorder associated with chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients. Recently, a new strain of probiotic bacteria has been described with the potential to decrease the severity of intestinal mucositis. However, it is not known whether the live probiotic is necessary for this effect. Intestinal mucositis is a serious disorder associated with chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients. Recently, a new strain of probiotic bacteria has been described with the potential to decrease the severity of intestinal mucositis. However, it is not known whether the live probiotic is necessary for this effect. We will compare the live probiotic, dead probiotic and factors sourced from this probiotic for the potential to decrease the severity of intestinal mucositis. Similarly, there have been anecdotal claims of medicinal application for so-called ‘bioactive’ extracts and formulations derived from a range of mammalian, marine and plant sources. Specifically, Lyprinol (an extract derived from the New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel), Emu Oil (derived from Emu meat) and the herbal extract Iberogast, have been reported to possess antiinflammatory properties. Indeed, these agents are used widely for the adjunctive relief of symptoms associated with arthritis and joint pain. However, these agents have yet to be tested for their potential to treat or prevent intestinal mucositis. For the first time, utilizing proven, controlled animal model systems, the current submission will explore the therapeutic potential of these agents, alone and in combination with indicated probiotics, for their capacity to treat or prevent mucositis. Should efficacy be demonstrated, a potential mechanism of action will be sought by investigating effects on intestinal stem cells.

    Translational Control During HIV-1 Replication

    HIV infection of CD4+ lymphocytes leads to a high rate of reproduction of new virus. However, in the brain, HIV infection of the astrocytes does not yield high levels of new virus. HIV is genetically active in these astrocytes, producing high levels of the messenger molecules, the so-called mRNA, that code for the proteins required for a new virus particle. We have determined that these HIV mRNAs are specifically prevented from translating into protein. The mechanisms controlling protein transla .... HIV infection of CD4+ lymphocytes leads to a high rate of reproduction of new virus. However, in the brain, HIV infection of the astrocytes does not yield high levels of new virus. HIV is genetically active in these astrocytes, producing high levels of the messenger molecules, the so-called mRNA, that code for the proteins required for a new virus particle. We have determined that these HIV mRNAs are specifically prevented from translating into protein. The mechanisms controlling protein translation from RNA are relatively poorly understood compared with the other control points of cellular gene expression, such as the synthesis of mRNA. This project examines how astrocytes rapidly detect the presence of HIV mRNA and alter their translation machinery to halt the expression of HIV protein. This host defence mechanism involves two key components; the cellular component that identifies and responds to the viral mRNA, and the structural features of the HIV mRNA that enable the cell to detect its viral origin. We will study how translation of HIV proteins requires both HIV and cellular factors. We will determine the impact of both viral RNA elements and viral RNA binding proteins on the translation of viral and cellular proteins. The contribution of the type-1 interferons that are produced in response to viral infection will be studied for their role in augmenting the inhibition of HIV protein translation. Since HIV infected astrocytes significantly contribute to the onset of AIDS dementia, we will sees a strategy to lock HIV into a dormant state in the brain and thereby prevent the neurodegenerative disease associated with HIV. We will use the anti-viral mechanism blocking HIV protein translation in astrocytes to protect other cell populations, such as the CD4+ lymphocytes, from HIV infection. These studies will also give insights into the general mechanisms for translational control of gene expression in human cells.
