Beyond the grammar checker: automated copy-editing assistance. In the traditional publishing process, copy-editors correct and polish what authors write, but financial pressures mean that copy-editing is often considered a luxury. This project uses natural language processing and artificial intelligence techniques to develop technology that automates a significant proportion of the copy editing task.
Improved syntactic and semantic analysis for natural language processing. This project aims to improve the accuracy of syntactic and semantic analysis of natural language for automatic extraction of meaning from text. This project aims to improve the accuracy of syntactic and semantic analysis of natural language for automatic extraction of meaning from text. Many data mining and information extraction applications rely on syntactic and semantic analysis. Current analysis approaches are limited because they require expensive manually-labelled data. The project plans to develop new indirectly-supervised approaches to overcome this labelled data bottleneck. By integrating information from large text corpora and structured databases, the project aims to minimise the reliance on manually-labelled data for training natural language processing systems. Automatic methods for syntactic and semantic analysis would have a wide range of applications in extracting information from large collections of unstructured data, such as hospital patient records or social media.Read moreRead less

This project aims to discover key fundamental technologies for automating assistance to non-expert users in the formulation of mathematical models. Through automating the modelling of combinatorial optimization problems, this research will generate new knowledge to address the fundamental challenges of automatic mathematical modelling. This intelligent assistant will enable synthesis of new mathematical models through the utilisation of pioneering natural language processing components and novel custom-made machine-readable knowledge bases. The outcome of this research will broaden access to high-quality models by non-expert workforce and alleviate the shortage of expert mathematicians, bringing significant social and economic benefits.Read moreRead less
Incremental syntactic parsing and coreference resolution. As computers become smaller, keyboards and screens become increasingly impractical. We'd like to be able to talk to our computers, but they'd have to understand what we say. This project will develop a computational model that tracks which things are talked about and identifies 'who did what to whom' in text or speech.
Computational models of synergies in human language acquisition. How do children learn language? Do they first learn to recognise words and then associate words with meanings, or do they use the meanings to figure out what the words are, or do they do both at the same time, and if so, how? This project will investigate questions like these using advanced computational models of the way children learn from their environment.
Advanced techniques for imaging radar interferometry. The Earth's surface is changing all the time, both slowly and dramatically, due to activities such as groundwater extraction, underground mining and earthquakes. This project will develop advanced, cost-effective and accurate imaging radar techniques that can measure subtle surface changes frequently, in order to safeguard significant infrastructure.
Living Together: New Approaches to Multispecies Conflict and Coexistence. Building on the methods and concepts of the emerging environmental humanities, this project will produce a new conceptual vocabulary for a world in which multispecies conflict and coexistence is increasingly important. It brings critical and generative rereadings of classical political thought and contemporary biopolitical and cosmopolitical approaches into dialogue with a set of empirical case studies emerging from novel ....Living Together: New Approaches to Multispecies Conflict and Coexistence. Building on the methods and concepts of the emerging environmental humanities, this project will produce a new conceptual vocabulary for a world in which multispecies conflict and coexistence is increasingly important. It brings critical and generative rereadings of classical political thought and contemporary biopolitical and cosmopolitical approaches into dialogue with a set of empirical case studies emerging from novel encounters between humans and other animals. This project will expand Australia’s knowledge base and research capacity in the interdisciplinary environmental humanities and stake out new approaches to the question of living together in a changing environment.Read moreRead less

Reading is a complex process that involves integrating sensory information extracted from text with stored memories about word meanings, syntactic structures and general knowledge. Most reading research has focused on the processing of isolated words, but normal reading requires integration processes that are not necessary to recognise single words. This research uses tasks requiring sentence comprehension and measures of eye movements during reading to investigate how readers retrieve and combine information while reading to comprehend text. It will contribute to developing more comprehensive theories of normal reading that can inform methods of teaching reading and contribute to refinement of text recognition systems.Read moreRead less
Artificial intelligence meets wireless sensor networks: filling the gaps between sensors using spatial reasoning. Monitoring potential disaster regions and integrating available information with expert knowledge can prevent disasters and save many lives. The outcome of our project is one of the key components for intelligent systems that can autonomously monitor the environment, make the correct inferences and issue appropriate warnings and recommendations.
Voice, indexicality and the mediation of diversity on Australian television. Multicultural Australia is a country of many voices, although concern has been expressed about the under-representation of those voices in the media. This project investigates how the voices of minority groups are represented on mainstream Australian television, when they do appear. It examines a substantial body of TV data, from four types of programming: news, sports, advertising and drama. It focuses on minority ethnic voices and on voices linked to different social classes. Close analysis of media processes will be supplemented by consulting professionals and TV viewers. The findings will provide a new perspective on the media’s role in promoting or curtailing cultural literacy and linguistic diversity.Read moreRead less
