Establishing an accurate chemical volatile profile of decomposition for use in victim recovery in mass disaster and forensic investigations. This project will advance forensic science by identifying a complete chemical profile of human decomposition scent. It will result in the development of a more accurate training scent aid to enhance the response of cadaver detection dogs deployed to scenes of mass disasters involving human remains.
Preventing terrorism through community-based approaches. This project aims to investigate the prevention of terrorism. It will examine approaches that involve police community engagement and local responses to violent extremism. This is a significant issue given communities are a key line of defence against terrorism. Expecting to generate new knowledge about counter-terrorism by examining policies adopted in Australia and abroad, the project will identify models of best practice for the prevent ....Preventing terrorism through community-based approaches. This project aims to investigate the prevention of terrorism. It will examine approaches that involve police community engagement and local responses to violent extremism. This is a significant issue given communities are a key line of defence against terrorism. Expecting to generate new knowledge about counter-terrorism by examining policies adopted in Australia and abroad, the project will identify models of best practice for the prevention of terrorism, ascertaining how community partnerships against terrorism can be improved. This will provide significant benefits by assisting police, government agencies, community groups and local service providers to implement and evaluate strategies that prevent terrorism.Read moreRead less
DNA and the missing: ancient DNA and advanced forensic identification. Identifying the remains of missing persons, disaster victims and war dead is of major social and cultural importance and has significant implications for national and international justice systems. This project will apply expertise in analysis of ancient DNA to build capacity and expertise within Australia to identify highly degraded human remains.
The politics of medievalism: persuasive narratives. This project aims to understand how narratives about the medieval past help form identities and spread ideologies in the present, across the political spectrum, time and national borders. It aims to generate new knowledge about medievalism and its persuasive power. It will shed new light on extremist exploitation of popular culture using an innovative interdisciplinary approach, digital analysis, and engaged partnerships. It will enhance capaci ....The politics of medievalism: persuasive narratives. It will enhance capacity to identify extremist messaging and create new grassroots programs promoting political tolerance and resilience to extremist propaganda and far-Right ideology, generating social and cultural benefit by strengthening Australian security, social cohesion and national values. Accurate face recognition is critical to normal social functioning of individuals and identity management processes that underpin a secure and fair Australia. Current understanding is based on tests that do not capture the rich context surrounding person identification in daily life. This project aims to introduce new methods for observing person identification in daily life and real-world tasks that are critical to border security, criminal investigations and the justice system. Expected outcomes include an integrated framework for person identification describing the cognitive mechanisms that link faces to surrounding visual context and the viewer’s background knowledge. Benefits in forensic, security and legal settings are expected.Read moreRead less

Illicit networks and emerging nuclear states. This project aims to understand how illicit networks might proliferate by tapping into the legitimate global spread of nuclear materials and dual-use technologies. Using an economic geographic framework, the project will conceptually integrate terrorists, criminals, and companies into nuclear-related trade networks, and assess the nuclear proliferation threat illicit networks pose in emerging civil nuclear states, with proof of concept through Southe ....Illicit networks and emerging nuclear states. This project aims to understand how illicit networks might proliferate by tapping into the legitimate global spread of nuclear materials and dual-use technologies. Using an economic geographic framework, the project will conceptually integrate terrorists, criminals, and companies into nuclear-related trade networks, and assess the nuclear proliferation threat illicit networks pose in emerging civil nuclear states, with proof of concept through Southeast Asian case studies. This is intended to minimise proliferation risk, and improve the Australian government and industry’s ability to participate in the global nuclear trade by increasing the effectiveness of strategic trade controls and nuclear materials security.Read moreRead less

The Limits of maritime jurisdiction: overcoming uncertainties and safeguarding Australia's interests. Research on the definition of baselines along Australia's long, complex and dynamic coastline will assist in the stable definition of the limits of its vast maritime claims. Allied to research on key oceans governance and maritime security challenges, the research will help to safeguard Australia's significant and growing marine resource interests.
Solid-state quantum communication technology. This project will develop the quantum information devices required to create a quantum communication network for the ultra-secure transmission of data. The key technological challenge is to entangle the quantum state of two crystals separated by kilometres, and maintain this entanglement for many seconds.
