We aim to replace this tedious process through novel AI methods capable of generating DNNs that can perform significantly better and at a lower computational cost than manually designed DNNs. We further expand this idea to solve complex real-world problems with both labelled and unlabelled data found in various applications including energy and climate change. The expected outcomes include the novel AI methods, highly trained AI researchers and a number of critical applications that will bring significant benefits to Australia and the world.Read moreRead less

The next generation fast radio burst detector for Australia. This project intends to provide a next-generation fast radio burst detector for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The project expects to both transform our understanding of fast radio bursts, enigmatic flashes of radio waves of unknown origin, but also use the bursts as tools to study the cosmic web of matter that resides in intergalactic space. To do so, the project aims to deliver a more sensitive detection system capable of localising a large sample of fast radio bursts to greater distances, found commensal to other observations. This should provide significant benefit, including the resolutions to key open astrophysical questions and improved scientific outcomes for transient searches with the Square Kilometre Array.Read moreRead less

During the first 500 million years, our universe was filled with hydrogen atoms illuminated by the first galaxies. The 21-cm radiation from this gas encodes properties of unseen galaxies and dark matter during this so-called cosmic dawn. This project aims to build an innovative framework to leverage future 21-cm experiments using The Square Kilometre Array to observe cosmic dawn, and to forecast the optimal constraints on dark matter physics. Additional outcomes include the largest cosmological simulation of the first galaxies powered by neural networks and improved knowledge of their properties using Bayes' theorem and The James Webb Space Telescope.Read moreRead less

We aim to investigate computer vision training data and test data, using automatically generated data sets for facial expression recognition and object re-identification. This project expects to quantify and understand the domain gap, the distribution difference between training and test data sets. Expected outcomes of this project are insights on measuring the domain gap, the ability to estimate model performance without accessing expensive test labels and improvements to system generalisation. This should provide significant benefits for computer vision applications that currently require expensive labelling, and commercial and economic benefits across sectors such as transportation, security and manufacturing.Read moreRead less

Computationally expensive simulations involving iterative solvers are increasingly being used in industry to assess performance of products and processes. Repeated use of such simulations is necessary to identify optimum solutions. Even with today's computing power, many such tasks remain computationally prohibitive. This project presents a novel approach to solve optimisation problems involving iterative solvers with limited computing budget. A wide range of industries involved in product and process design would gain a significant competitive advantage from this unique technical innovation. This project aims to combine strengths of human cognition and evolutionary computing to efficiently solve problems which neither can do alone. The project will develop techniques combining advanced non-intrusive sensor measures of behaviour and emotional reaction in interaction tasks to enable high level computer support for human goal seeking, in complex data and design environments. This project will allow non-expert users to use tools normally requiring extensive training in settings where the user can 'see' when they get something they like but do not know how to instruct a computer system to show or do it. Applications of the project will include visualisation for bespoke manufacturing or for high dimensional data, generating abstract art, or improving teleconferencing systems.Read moreRead less
