Summary
Collagen, a major component of scar, accumulates in some hearts and we may expect this to increase stiffness, threatening heart function. We have shown poor heart relaxation correlates with increased collagen on heart magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We aim to establish a link between MRI findings and direct measures of heart stiffness, a link between degree of stiffness and amount of collagen and effects of anti-fibrotic therapy on heart collagen; aiding diagnosis, prognosis and outcome.

My research program aims to improve the outcomes for those living with systemic sclerosis related pulmonary arterial hypertension (SSc-PAH) and reduce its associated societal burden through the evaluation and implementation of a novel PAH screening algorithm; the use of risk stratification tools in therapeutic decisions; and the development of a more streamlined management approach. Cardiovascular disease is the most serious cause of mortality and morbidity in society, with one Australian dying every 13 mins. Our focus is on cardiac fibroblasts - changeable cells that regulate the mechanical integrity of the heart, and which are key therapeutic targets in heart disease. Single cell methods have revolutionised the study of complex tissues. Here we will apply molecular assays to thousands of single heart cells to build a new conceptual framework for fighting heart disease.

Summary
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an irregular heart rhythm commonly seen in patients with a weakened heart muscle. Symptoms and heart function may improve if the rhythm is restored through a catheter ablation procedure. This study will assess whether this procedure improves the function of the heart in those with AF where there is weakness and scarring of the heart. We hope to better determine which patients are best suited and will derive the most benefit from this procedure.

Summary
Diabetic patients are prone to developing chronic heart failure. In the diabetic heart, scar tissue accumulates within the muscle (fibrosis), impairing function. We have developed a new drug to treat fibrosis in diabetic kidney disease (FT-11), and have approval for pre-clinical development of this drug. We now aim to test whether FT-11 is also effective in reducing fibrosis in the diabetic heart, and whether this can prevent heart failure in an animal model of diabetic heart disease.

Cardiac fibrosis is a disease of the heart in which large amounts of collagen are deposited within the heart tissue. This leads to poor heart function and may also lead to sudden death due to arrhythmias (abnormal electrical pulses). This study sets out to define the role of substances called interleukins and special circulating cells called lymphocytes, macrophages and progenitor cells in the development of cardiac fibrosis.
