Cell types and cell states revealed by single-cell regulatory networks. This project aims to use single-cell gene regulation networks to predict cell types. Computational approaches are needed to recapitulate how the over 37 trillion cells program the shared genome sequence in a human body to create astoundingly diverse forms and functions. Computational approaches are needed to recapitulate how the over 37 trillion cells program the shared genome sequence in a human body to create astoundingly diverse forms and functions. This project integrates millions of high-resolution single-cell gene expression profiles with large-scale population regulatory data to systematically reconstruct gene regulatory networks. These networks are the molecular basis for understanding human cells. This projects outcomes intend to include the first reference single-cell regulatory database and novel methods and software to predict individual cells. This project will contribute to advancing Australia's capabilities in single-cell, precision medicine, and big biological data analysis leading to significant scientific, societal and commercial benefits.Read moreRead less
From genotype to phenotype: Molecular photofitting for criminal investigations. DNA found at crime scenes has the potential to provide a physical description of the donor in the same way as an eyewitness statement can be used to make a facial reconstruction. This project will investigate those physical traits which can be derived from the analysis of DNA present in samples collected in relation to criminal activities.
Developmental Pathways to Intimate Partner Homicide: Understanding Individual and Situational Dimensions. Intimate partner homicide is a serious public health and safety issue. This project will have several benefits. The findings will extend understanding of pathways leading to partner homicide. The findings will contribute to improved decision-making models by police and social welfare agencies. The innovative longitudinal costing method that will be developed and applied in the Queensland context will enable an assessment of the cost-effectiveness of diversionary and crime prevention programs. The Stemformatics gene expression compendium: development of multivariate statistical approaches for cross platform analyses. Scientific data is gathered in many different forms, but there are significant gaps in our ability to analyse multiple datasets when generated on different pieces of equipment. This project will study three typical research questions in stem cell biology to develop new analytical approaches to help solve this major data gap.
Whistling While They Work: Enhancing the Theory and Practice of Internal Witness Management in Public Sector Organisations. The protection of whistleblowers and other internal witnesses to corruption, misconduct and maladministration is a great unsolved problem in public sector governance. Involving 11 integrity institutions, this first national study of internal witness management will describe and compare organisational experience under varying public interest disclosure regimes across the Au ....Whistling While They Work: Enhancing the Theory and Practice of Internal Witness Management in Public Sector Organisations. Of this, money laundering/document fraud is estimated at ~$4.5 billion and ~$1.5 to $3 trillion worldwide. Although many techniques combat document fraud (signatures, specialised inks and paper, watermarking etc) they are severely limited by low specificity or are easy to copy.
Alternatively identification by DNA fingerprinting is highly specific (>10 billion to 1) and can now be obtain ....DNA FINGERPRINTING IN DOCUMENT SECURITY TO COUNTER TERRORISM. Regulation of organ size and stem cell hierarchy in the developing kidney. Transient stem/progenitor cell populations play essential roles in establishing organ systems. The balance between self-renewal and differentiation in the nephron progenitor population plays a major, but poorly understood, role in regulating kidney development. Factors produced by undifferentiated progenitors promote organ expansion, whereas differentiation of these cells builds functional capacity.
