Australia urgently needs new technologies to prevent and fight crime and terrorism. This equipment will address current outstanding problems in forensic science and related disciplines, namely the requirement to (1) analyse minute quantities of samples, (2) differentiate samples with similar matrices but trace differences, (3) analyse solid samples that are difficult to analyse by current techniques. This equipment is also vital for research which will improve the justice system, the quality of food and health products and increase industry competitiveness through novel industrial and environmental testing. Acquiring this infrastructure will safeguard and ensure Australia's continuing prosperity.Read moreRead less

The protection of whistleblowers and other internal witnesses to corruption, misconduct and maladministration is a great unsolved problem in public sector governance. Involving 11 integrity institutions, this first national study of internal witness management will describe and compare organisational experience under varying public interest disclosure regimes across the Australian public sector. By identifying and promoting current best practice in workplace responses to public interest whistleblowing, the project will use the experience and perceptions of internal witnesses and first- and second-level managers to identify more routine strategies for preventing, reducing and addressing reprisals and other whistleblowing-related conflicts.Read moreRead less
Face-space: linking three-dimensional shape and human perception across changing viewing conditions. People, and increasingly machines, use faces to identify and interact with people. One source of information available for this is the three-dimensional (3D) shape of the face. This information, unlike a photograph, does not change with lighting and viewpoint. This project will link measurements of face shape to the perceived similarities and differences between faces we use to make decisions. ....Face-space: linking three-dimensional shape and human perception across changing viewing conditions. This will facilitate the use of 3D databases in diverse applications including establishing identity, making facial reconstructions of victims of crime or disaster, making databases searchable, computer animation, archaeology, and plastic surgery. In particular the work will make physical databases relevant to human perception. Read moreRead less
Risk, Urban Fire Protection and Security Networks. Urban fire prevention is a critical field for public security and economic development. As such, it has always been shaped by factors beyond those of simple technological growth. These include major unanticipated events and the responses to them by many state and non-state agencies with divergent interests and knowledge bases. Urban fire prevention is a critical field for public security and economic development. As such, it has always been shaped by factors beyond those of simple technological growth. These include major unanticipated events and the responses to them by many state and non-state agencies with divergent interests and knowledge bases. By analysing the resulting 'technological politics', the project will examine the ways in which this strategic field has taken on a risk-based preventative orientation. This will contribute new perspectives and considerations for the assessment and development of fire prevention and urban security in the 21st century.Read moreRead less

Identity fraud is recognised as a serious and significant problem in Australia by Government and industry, with estimates of losses ranging up to $4 billion per annum. This project aims to research identity fraud from an organisational and social perspective by investigating control, management and policy alternatives. Outcomes will include conceptual, effects and costing models of identity fraud, successful strategies for organisational management control, new techniques to improve prevention and detection, and comparative evaluations of social, legal and privacy implications. The research program will provide the missing research partnership that will inform control, management and policy decisions of national significance.Read moreRead less
Solving the passport problem: re-designing photo-ID to improve recognition. We aim to contribute to national security and crime prevention by increasing the accuracy with which security staff can check the validity of photo-ID documents such as passports. Research shows that it is surprisingly difficult to determine if the image on a photo-ID document is of the bearer, and as a result it is likely that fraudulent use of photo-ID documents sometimes goes undetected. Our novel approach is to use our knowledge of unfamiliar face perception to develop new image formats for photo-ID documents which increase the accuracy with which security staff can detect identity fraud.Read moreRead less

This research is directed towards improving the operational effectiveness of our defence and civilian first-response-groups, which include the Special Forces, law-enforcement, fire fighting and special emergency services. These groups are highly specialised and have very focused operations which require innovative responses and adaptability. The technologies developed in the course of this project will transform the way these agencies conduct their operations and will have a beneficial impact on our quality of life and social order.
The research will also advance the knowledge base in the practical implementation of human localisation systems and provide the enabling mechanism for its adoption into industry.

Through developing best practice models for managing vicarious trauma in investigators of Internet child exploitation, the project will result in enhanced job satisfaction and less burnout of workers, and reduced health costs for policing organisations. Thus the project addresses a serious occupational health issue and contributes to the goal of promoting and maintaining good health. Further, by better managing the occupational health of investigators, the project will enhance the capacity of police organisations to deliver on their mission of investigating and preventing Internet child exploitation. This in turn contributes to the reduced consumption of Internet child exploitation and the associated traumatisation of abused victims. Read moreRead less
