The history of AYO, which is Australia's centre for excellence for aspiring orchestral musicians and an arts company responsive to changing socio-artistic conditions, needs investigating re the bridge it provides to the professional music world, its socio-artistic importance, and to answer calls for accountability. Through research into its innovative training and performance programs and archives (1948 - the present) and comparisons of its role with state and overseas youth orchestras, this project will measure and interpret AYO's contributions to Australia's cultural life in urban, regional and rural areas, including its participants' accelerated musical development and enhanced career opportunities.Read moreRead less
Understanding innovative opera attendees: modelling the responsiveness to marketing alternatives in a dynamic subscription market. Opera performances are valuable components of Australia's performing arts profile, both historically and currently. However, in an increasingly competitive and commercial environment, opera marketers need to understand better how to match potential consumers to the available operas, including inexperienced consumers and unfamiliar or esoteric operas. This research project will inform opera marketers of the major influences in a dynamic opera environment, and provide an improved understanding of how to address market segmentation and product portfolios in an optimal way, so that consumer satisfaction and company profitability are maximised, while encouraging innovation of an international standard and employment opportunities locally. Digitally created scenography has the potential to create immersive stage environments that are designed for 21st century visual impact, and to re-model the economics of live performance by reducing the cost of touring. Deakin Motion.Lab and the Victorian Opera aim to work together to design, test and evaluate the artistic and economic value of virtual scenography for touring performing arts companies. This project aims to enable opera companies to present large scale productions in previously inaccessible regional and rural areas, enhancing both artistic experience and access to this cultural experience for audiences. These outcomes aim to be transferable to other theatre forms such as ballet and theatre that require large-scale set production.Read moreRead less
The spatial ensemble: scaling instrumental resonance and morphology for spatialised performance. This project will lead to a series of new cultural experiences for Australian audiences based on extended instrumental research integrated with new sound spatialisation techniques. This project will lead to a series of new cultural experiences for Australian audiences based on extended instrumental research integrated with new sound spatialisation techniques. The project will ensure that industry partner ELISION's contribution to Australian culture for over 20 years via innovative performances, installations, broadcasts and recordings is reinforced by new research with flow-on effects to their other relationships and activities. The interim and final outcomes of this partnership will lead to a model for university-arts research collaborations that will be tested in international contexts, thus ensuring a wider exposure for Australian cultural research.Read moreRead less
Implementation and Evaluation of an Intensive Music Education Program for Schoolchildren. Music training is vital for schoolchildren. Children achieve goal-satisfaction and enhanced coordination from sport, focus and independence from schoolwork, and the opportunity to express emotions productively via dance/drama. Music training is unique in that it combines these benefits, and can lead to improvement in non-musical outcomes (e.g., maths, self-esteem), while potentially reaching otherwise dise ....Implementation and Evaluation of an Intensive Music Education Program for Schoolchildren. Music training is vital for schoolchildren. Children achieve goal-satisfaction and enhanced coordination from sport, focus and independence from schoolwork, and the opportunity to express emotions productively via dance/drama. Music training is unique in that it combines these benefits, and can lead to improvement in non-musical outcomes (e.g., maths, self-esteem), while potentially reaching otherwise disenfranchised adolescent groups. Music training programs in Australia vary in quality and effectiveness, and unfortunately, under-resourced communities offer little. The proposed music program will be offered to all students within selected schools, and will provide information on the value of music in the Australian school curriculum. Read moreRead less
Making Music Work: Sustainable Portfolio Careers for Australian Musicians. This project plans to explore the conditions and strategies needed for musicians to sustain successful portfolio careers. Most musicians have ‘portfolio careers’, combining aspects of performance, recording, creation, music direction, teaching, community activities, health, retail and a presence in online environments. This phenomenon — often across music genres — is widespread but not well understood. The project involve ....Making Music Work: Sustainable Portfolio Careers for Australian Musicians. The project involves surveys and 12 in-depth case studies of individual musicians or ensembles that will aim to identify key success factors and obstacles. This information is intended to inform opportunities for training, development and support.Read moreRead less
Agile opera: chamber opera in a new era. Chamber Made Opera and university researchers will explore new production and audience models that engage a digitally enabled society. This project will support the creation of innovative performance works, enable the engagement of new audiences, and provide outcomes that promote the sustainability of arts organisations in the digital age.
Non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions in afforested ecosystems in southeastern Australia - fluxes, processes and regional budget. There are no data available about the extent of emissions of the non-CO2 greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and methane from soils of forest ecosystems in Australia and the current methodolgy to quantify these emissions contains high uncertainties. There are no data available about the extent of emissions of the non-CO2 greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and methane from soils of forest ecosystems in Australia and the current methodolgy to quantify these emissions contains high uncertainties. Using the latest technology available we propose to i) measure emission rates of afforested ecosystems for non-CO2 greenhouse gases in relation to previous land-use in southeastern Australia, ii) identify the processes controlling the emissions, iii) use the obtained data to calibrate a biogeochemical model, and iv) use the model to estimate regional inventories for non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions in southeastern Australia.Read moreRead less

Our project will build new atmospheric density correction models (ADCMs) for accurate prediction of debris object and satellite orbits. This research will have tremendous impacts on realizing unaided debris laser ranging. An order of magnitude accuracy improvement to the ADCMs will lead to a significant breakthrough in space object tracking. The benefits of this research are: it will put Australia in a leading position in the world on ADCM study; to maintain Australia's leading role in space surveillance and greatly enhanced operational capability & efficiency of Australian space tracking systems; and to contribute significantly to the space environment info management, e.g. accurate collision warning and space junk tracking.Read moreRead less
