Technology is changing the lives of Australians. We need to understand the impact on health to gain the benefits with minimal harm. This fellowship will support a program of internationally leading research drawing together ergonomics, physiotherapy and physical activity expertise. Example projects include the impact of electronic games on children’s activity, walking workstations to increase physical activity of office workers and a family-based program for overweight adolescents.

Summary
Increasing childhood obesity and reduced physical activity are major health issues in Australia. Three quarters of Australian children play electronic games and this is widely thought to reduce their physical activity. Whilst the effect of TV viewing is well understood, the impact of electronic games is not. This study will test whether access to electronic games results in decreased physical activity in children. We need to understand the impact this popular activity is having on child health.
I am a physiotherapist with special expertise in ergonomics. My research aims to improve health outcomes through an understanding the physical impact of new technology use.

Summary
Australia is ageing rapidly but we still do not know whether the risk factors, such as health and lifestyle, that predict ill health in middle aged people, apply to people as they reach old age. This study of a large group of older men will examine the type and level of risk factors that apply to men aged beyond 75 years. It will not only determine rates of disability and mortality but also health service outcomes, including hospitalisation, and residential and community care usage.

Summary
A rise in calcium and free radicals in the heart are associated with the development of heart disease. We have good evidence that a protein in the heart muscle known as the L-type calcium channel mediates changes in calcium in response to free radicals. This proposal will identify how the channel function is altered by free radicals so that a therapeutic target can be designed to prevent altered channel function and development of heart disease during increases in free radicals.

Many plants maintain an elaborate RNA-editing machine that allows them to correct accumulated errors in their organellar genomes by specifically editing the RNA transcripts of the affected genes. In Australia, hundreds of mine lakes will develop over the next ten years and beyond. When the base mineralogy is pyritic the water can become highly acidic with high concentrations of dissolved metals. These mine lakes frequently exist in regions where water resources are in short supply.
