Earth and Ocean Informatics and Technology Network (EON-ITnet). Sustainable resource exploration and mining onshore, as well as marine planning, exploration, and defence depend on effective cross-disciplinary investigation, sharing of expertise and technologies for integration and computational analysis of multidimensional data spaces. EON-ITNET will cross-fertilise the use of artificial intelligence, advanced computing and smart information sharing for management, analysis, visualisation and metadata modelling between these traditionally separate research groups, with the outcome of improving research efficiency and lowering costs. EON-ITNET will form an alliance with the Caltech-based GeoFramework, which is advancing a novel object-oriented data analysis environment, binding community software for Earth visualisation and simulation to 4D data bases.

The EarthByte software and database system. Earth processes over geological timescales cannot be understood outside of a plate tectonic context. However, no standard tool exists to explore the causes and effects of lithosphere-mantle interaction in accordance with past plate configurations. Our aim is to develop a Palaeo-Geographic Information System called EarthByte that will connect the open source and architecture-independent GPlates and GMT software, and implement XML-based service interfaces and databases. EarthByte will create the foundation for an e-geoscience framework for grid-based data access and Earth process modelling by linking geological and geophysical observations to palaeogeographic models for constraining mantle convection and lithospheric deformation.

ARC Financial Integrity Research Network. The integrity of the financial system is constantly under stress because of the development of ever more complex financial instruments, structures and strategies, and the associated research technologies that continues to accelerate worldwide. FIRN's vision is to harness the considerable strengths of Australia's internationally renowned finance, accounting and economics researchers into a research agenda to address issues concerning the integrity of the financial system. It will enable Australian research in this area to match the scale and impact of similar research in other major international financial centres, and play an essential role in placing Australia among the world's leaders in financial markets related research.

Integrated Intelligent Decision Support for Field Design and Management of Census Operations in Australia. This project contributes to a more reliable and accurate measurement of the number and key characteristics of Australian people by supporting a more efficient and effective field design and management of the Census operations. As the Census provides a snapshot of Australia and is crucial to communities, private institutions and all levels of government in the planning of services and facilities, this project not only addresses the research priority of smart information use, but also contributes to strengthening Australia's social and economic fabric. This project will also train highly qualified IT specialists critical to Australia's scientific and industrial development, thus increasing our competitiveness in information technology R&D.

Pattern Discovery of Discriminating Behaviour Associated with Hidden Communities. A sound understanding of discriminating behaviour in hidden communities, e.g. market manipulation, is essential for effective intervention and prevention. This project will deliver novel and workable algorithms and tools for modelling and pattern discovery of such behaviour. This will safeguard Australia by tackling crucial business and social issues like abnormal trading, online crime and terrorism, thereby enhancing public confidence, compliance and security in both the economy and society, by preventing and reducing economic and social impact. It will create skills and outcomes to further Australia's leadership in managing emerging data mining challenges and applications, and will deepen collaboration with eminent researchers worldwide.
