Automatic speech-based assessment of mental state via mobile device. This project aims to create the first mobile, device-based automatic assessment of mental state from acoustic speech. Focusing on novel approaches for eliciting speech, for regression-based scoring of mental state and for longitudinal modelling of speech, the project takes speech processing out of the laboratory and into realistic environments. The project is significant because elicitation approach and longitudinal modelling have been acknowledged by the research community as challenges that are valuable to investigate, and because conventional regression methods are sub-optimal on ordinal mental state scales. This is significant commercially because mobile devices allow individually tailored, frequent and low-cost mental state assessment. Expected outcomes will include commercial-ready technology, trialled on Australians, accessible to everyone with a mobile device and concentration of Australian research and development capability in a rapidly growing application area.Read moreRead less

The resulting cost-efficiencies will advantage Australian producers in competitive global markets; our companies will be well placed to produce and install active sensor network techniques and to provide training in the associated asset management systems. Australian industry will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with the world-class research networks on emerging areas such as damage diagnosis, prognosis and control, and structural repair.Read moreRead less
New techniques to detect fetal heart abnormalities. Australia’s national fetal death rate is 6.7 per one thousand births. In Australia’s Indigenous community it surges to 12.3 deaths per one thousand births. Early diagnosis (and management) of abnormal fetu.ses with cardiac defects will go a long way in reducing these numbers. The next generation speaker recognition system. The next generation of speaker recognition technologies developed through this project will enable secure person authentication by voice in financial transactions and benefit the community through the elimination of identity fraud. This project will safeguard Australia by identifying criminal suspects using their voice and combat terrorism by using voice to locate and track terrorists.
Improving Signal Detection Range of Active Seismic Monitoring in Mines. This project will develop a new generation of sensors that will process incoming seismic waves from an active source to accurately estimate the properties of underground rock mass in real time. This will lead to safer mining operations that will decrease the number of injuries and deaths. A probability graph model will be used to fuse measurements from different sensors to produce more accurate estimates of the rock mass. This will lead to safer mining operations that will decrease the number of injuries and deaths. A probability graph model will be used to fuse measurements from different sensors to produce more accurate estimates of the rock mass. A new low-cost seismic source will excite large areas of rock mass for continuous monitoring of the changes in stress and fracture density caused by mining. This will lead to methodologies that will significantly improve mining operations and increase Australia’s productivity in the mining sector.Read moreRead less
Advanced techniques for imaging radar interferometry. The Earth's surface is changing all the time, both slowly and dramatically, due to activities such as groundwater extraction, underground mining and earthquakes. This project will develop advanced, cost-effective and accurate imaging radar techniques that can measure subtle surface changes frequently, in order to safeguard significant infrastructure.
Improved decoding of human brain activity using advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging at ultra-high field strength. Using advanced MRI methods at ultra-high field, this project aims to enable the decoding and reconstruction of visual stimuli, as well as imagined ones from small functional units (layers and columns) in the human brain in vivo. This will be made possible by the use of a new functional MRI method, concurrent high temporal and spatial resolution and whole brain coverage as ....Improved decoding of human brain activity using advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging at ultra-high field strength. Vector quantization approaches to nonlinear stochastic estimation. Many problems in health, economics, telecommunications and industrial control can be formulated as estimation problems with uncertain data. This project is aimed at developing a novel class of algorithms aimed at high complexity estimation problems. If successful, the project will provide new approaches to these problems.
Joint modelling and recognition of linguistic and paralinguistic speech information. A new modelling framework will be developed exploiting interdependence between linguistic and paralinguistic cues to improve automatic recognition of emotion-related information. Applications in the high-tech industry include automatic routing of angry telephone customers or pre-suicidal crisis centre callers to specialist operators/clinicians.

The long-term integrity of engineering assets depends on the quality of their maintenance which runs into billions of dollars per year in Australia. This project aims to develop a new fundamental automated technique for the detection and diagnosis of machinery faults. The innovation lies in the ability of this technique to not depend on knowledge of fault components in the discrete wavelet packet analysis. All other work conducted to date depends on knowledge of these components and their location. The results of this work will vastly improve the costly manually based diagnostics procedures in the maintenance of plant and industrial assets.Read moreRead less
