Earth processes over geological timescales cannot be understood outside of a plate tectonic context. However, no standard tool exists to explore the causes and effects of lithosphere-mantle interaction in accordance with past plate configurations. Our aim is to develop a Palaeo-Geographic Information System called EarthByte that will connect the open source and architecture-independent GPlates and GMT software, and implement XML-based service interfaces and databases. EarthByte will create the foundation for an e-geoscience framework for grid-based data access and Earth process modelling by linking geological and geophysical observations to palaeogeographic models for constraining mantle convection and lithospheric deformation.Read moreRead less

A sound understanding of discriminating behaviour in hidden communities, e.g. market manipulation, is essential for effective intervention and prevention. This project will deliver novel and workable algorithms and tools for modelling and pattern discovery of such behaviour. This will safeguard Australia by tackling crucial business and social issues like abnormal trading, online crime and terrorism, thereby enhancing public confidence, compliance and security in both the economy and society, by preventing and reducing economic and social impact. It will create skills and outcomes to further Australia's leadership in managing emerging data mining challenges and applications, and will deepen collaboration with eminent researchers worldwide.Read moreRead less
Thermo-mechanical interactive atlas of basin evolution. We propose to create a thermo-mechanical interactive atlas of basin evolution as a desktop geodynamic modelling resource for exploration geologists. The atlas will allow the user to iteratively run our 2D/3D basin modelling software ELLIPSIS to alter model parameters until they match observed basin geometries or thermal history. Model iteration will be based on interactive user evaluation of model outputs and genetic algorithms, which progressively modify the solution set by mimicking the evolutionary behavior of biological systems (selection, cross-over and mutation), until an acceptable result is achieved. The interactive atlas will be applied to Australian and international case studies.Read moreRead less

Sustainable resource exploration and mining onshore, as well as marine planning, exploration, and defence depend on effective cross-disciplinary investigation, sharing of expertise and technologies for integration and computational analysis of multidimensional data spaces. EON-ITNET will cross-fertilise the use of artificial intelligence, advanced computing and smart information sharing for management, analysis, visualisation and metadata modelling between these traditionally separate research groups, with the outcome of improving research efficiency and lowering costs. EON-ITNET will form an alliance with the Caltech-based GeoFramework, which is advancing a novel object-oriented data analysis environment, binding community software for Earth visualisation and simulation to 4D data bases.Read moreRead less

The aims of the project is to gain better understanding of spatial characteristics of wireless communication channels; and to apply spatial signal processing theory to design receivers for wireless systems. The expected outcomes of the projects are new system theory for spatial signal processing, a new spatial model to characterize wireless communication channels, categorize a relationship between scattering environment antenna spacing and multi-element antenna system capacity, and novel use of multiple antennas to improve the performance of wireless systems. Success in this investigation could have wide applications in the development of future mobile and fixed wireless communication systems.Read moreRead less

Water quality in Richmond River estuary, NSW, is of critical concern to fishing, aquaculture, tourism and recreation industries. Upland horticulture on the Alstonville Plateau and drained acid sulfate soils in lowland floodplains discharge nutrient-rich, acidic water to the estuary. Previous studies have treated floodplains, upland and estuary separately. This study will develop an integrated catchment approach to water management in the Lower Richmond by treating surface water and groundwater as a single resource. The whole-of-system approach will help mitigate socio-economic and environment impacts of nutrient-rich and acidic drainage waters. It will be transferable to other "hot spots" in Australia.Read moreRead less
