Development of fundamental perception technology and algorithms for mining safety. The project will push the boundaries of mining safety research to deliver innovative and powerful tools to understand and control the level of risk of an operation. This knowledge will be used to develop algorithms to best assess safety issues in different scenarios, to design safety procedures and to develop operator training.
A Layered Controlled Natural Language for Knowledge Representation. In this research project we will develop a controlled natural language for knowledge representation that has the potential to bridge the gap between fragments of natural language and formal languages. This controlled language will be based on a variety of increasing sophisticated layers, each building upon those below it by providing enhancements in expressive power. Sentences of the controlled language will be unambiguously tra ....A Layered Controlled Natural Language for Knowledge Representation. In this research project we will develop a controlled natural language for knowledge representation that has the potential to bridge the gap between fragments of natural language and formal languages. This controlled language will be based on a variety of increasing sophisticated layers, each building upon those below it by providing enhancements in expressive power. Sentences of the controlled language will be unambiguously translatable into a corresponding formal language. Anyone who can read and write English can immediately use the controlled language with the help an intelligent text editor. This technology will make it possible for non-specialists to write problem specifications in terms of the application domain without the need to formally encode the information.Read moreRead less
Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain r ....Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain relevance feedback. The outcome will be a prototype system useful to business and industry though to guide our thinking we will use issues in constructing a quality digital library collection as a sounding board.

Beamforming with acoustic vector sensors for audio user interfaces. We aim to create new Audio User Interfaces (AUIs) for the automatic separation and annotation of audio from complex sound scenes using acoustic vector sensor beamforming technology. Specifically, we will develop: speech AUIs for noisy, multi-talker, reverberant environments; and sound transcription AUIs for the deaf. Ultimately, users will be able to walk into a room, hold conversations and leave with a searchable, automatically ....Beamforming with acoustic vector sensors for audio user interfaces. Specifically, we will develop: speech AUIs for noisy, multi-talker, reverberant environments; and sound transcription AUIs for the deaf. Ultimately, users will be able to walk into a room, hold conversations and leave with a searchable, automatically-generated transcript of the audio events, tagged with metadata. The application of these technologies will create new possibilities for recording audio in the music, radio, TV industries, and future home based audio communication systems.Read moreRead less

Improved early detection of breast cancer enabled by grid-computing and advanced modelling and visualisation of MR images. This project will investigate the utility of grid computing in the detection of breast cancer from magnetic resonance (MR) images. The large quantity of data acquired using MR imaging is difficult for clinicians to review and the cost of missed or incorrect detection is high. This project will investigate the utility of grid computing in the detection of breast cancer from magnetic resonance (MR) images. The large quantity of data acquired using MR imaging is difficult for clinicians to review and the cost of missed or incorrect detection is high. To provide rapid visualisation and assessment of the acquired data, grid computing will be used in conjunction with interactive visualisation with haptic feedback. Grid computing experience and haptic device expertise will be achieved via Swedish collaborators. The successful outcome of this project will be software for the production of 3D colour-coded breast images in which suspicious regions are highlighted and can be physically interrogated using the haptic device.Read moreRead less
Acoustic Filter Functions from Morphological Measurements. This project works toward enabling the broadcast of high-fidelity 3D audio. By developing an efficient technique for deriving personalised acoustic filter functions based on image data of the listener's head and ears, we hope to enable high-fidelity 3D audio decoding and rendering. Morphological parameterisation techniques and databases recently developed at the University of York will be combined with the statistical synthesis technique ....Acoustic Filter Functions from Morphological Measurements. This project works toward enabling the broadcast of high-fidelity 3D audio. By developing an efficient technique for deriving personalised acoustic filter functions based on image data of the listener's head and ears, we hope to enable high-fidelity 3D audio decoding and rendering. Morphological parameterisation techniques and databases recently developed at the University of York will be combined with the statistical synthesis techniques and databases developed at the University of Sydney to substantially reduce the development time required for either group alone. Psychoacoustic experiments carried out at the University of Sydney will demonstrate the fidelity of the delivered 3D audio.Read moreRead less

The incorporation of humans as decision-makers into a complex system comprising of many autonomous agents is becoming increasingly important in areas such as defence, search-and-rescue, special emergency services, bush-fire and ecology management. This project will address how human decisions are made in such systems through the formulation and demonstration of innovative algorithms which model the operator decision making process. Generating solutions to this increasingly important area will provide Australia's industry and community services the necessary knowledge for deploying such systems and thus improving service effectiveness, as well as the implementation of autonomous systems into new areas and thus increasing economic growth.Read moreRead less
CyberMate: using digital social media and Internet data to support mental health interventions in young Australians. This project will develop CyberMate, which is a novel automated psychological intervention based on data collected from social networks, personal diaries, natural language processing and machine learning techniques. The Internet-based intervention will be the first of its kind, helping young people affected by depression and other mental health issues.
Filters reveal what flicker conceals: temporal processing in the human visual system. I have recently discovered a new form of camouflage using 10Hz luminance flicker. This project will quantify this effect and examine the extent to which it generalises across colour and spatial dimensions and to video sequences depicting natural scenes. This project will quantify this effect and examine the extent to which it generalises across colour and spatial dimensions and to video sequences depicting natural scenes. This information is expected to provide foundational information to technologies relating to national security that rely on visual concealment. This research will examine the extent to which filtering out these camouflaging frequencies enhances our sensitivity to low temporal frequency information. This decamouflaging aspect of my research is expected to improve the clarity of digital video-based technologies including ultrasound, educational, info-tainment and defence applicationsRead moreRead less

This project will research how to crowd-source the collection and analysis of environmental animal sounds (for example, birds, frogs). This will enable a bio-acoustic observatory which provides a scalable, objective and permanent record of the environment, something hitherto impossible. The project will investigate how to engage the community of birdwatchers to extend their pastime online with new kinds of interactive tools to enable collaborative analysis of big audio data, and new kinds of birding experiences. Outcomes will be: new approaches to physical/virtual engagement in human-computer interaction; new approaches to analysing big data; a new validated ecological monitoring technique and concepts for sustainable knowledge generation communities.Read moreRead less
