A Facility for Ultra-Precise Time and Frequency Transfer: Creating an Australian User Group for the ESA Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space Mission. The National Measurement Laboratory and the University of Western Australia are the only Australian research institutions developing high precision electromagnetic oscillators ("clocks"). Establishing the state-of-the-art time transfer link between these institutions will combine their expertise and allow a broad spectrum of new research activities important for frequency metrology, global positioning and accurate tests of fundamental physics. The time transfer facility will also create the infrastructure necessary for Australia participation in the future international space mission - Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space.

    $320,000.00
    Summary
Advanced microwave and millimetre-wave microelectromechanical technologies for wireless communications. The project deals with the development and integration of radio frequency microelectromechanical devices that can reduce space and cost concomitant with enhanced performance. The outcomes of this proposal are devices with increased functionality required for multi-gigabit data rate transmission and millimetre wave wireless technologies.

Australian dark matter detector for high mass axions. This project aims to provide the necessary equipment to allow an Australian Dark Matter Axion Haloscope, with significantly increased sensitivity by providing a milliKelvin environment and a 14 T magnet to drive axion-to-photon conversions. This project aims to provide the necessary equipment to allow an Australian Dark Matter Axion Haloscope, with significantly increased sensitivity by providing a milliKelvin environment and a 14 T magnet to drive axion-to-photon conversions. Dark matter is a fundamental component of the universe yet the nature of its composition is still unknown. There is growing evidence that it is comprised of axions, a low energy, weakly interacting particle. The precision measurement tools developed by this project will have the potential to contribute both to the economy, via commercialisation, and to national security, via future applications to radar, communication and the development of engineered quantum systems.

    Funding Amount
    $400,000.00
    Summary
Dual-band antennas with digitally steerable beams made out of multi-state electromagnetic elements. A collection of antennas required for forthcoming wireless systems will be designed, made and tested. They are ideal for wireless on-body medical devices and wireless transmission of high-quality video and high-speed data. These systems will bring great benefits to wireless users and patients, including better quality of life and convenience.

Wideband Strongly-Truncated Composite Cavity-Resonator Antennas. A rapidly growing demand for fast wireless services calls for wideband communication systems with wideband antennas, which are compact, aesthetically appealing and inexpensive, yet have good performance. With novel concepts, this project aims to produce a new class of antennas that deliver impressive performance (bandwidth and gain) while taking up a dramatically reduced area in a way that was impossible before, increasing a figure-of-merit to up to seven times the state-of-the-art. Their planar geometry and simplicity lead to low cost. This is expected to create new knowledge, design methods and examples, prototypes, test results and guidelines required to design, optimise and make these versatile antennas for emerging robust broadband wireless systems.
