Each Theme is formulated to drive multidisciplinary, innovative research as well as inspire new collaborative initiatives. Four Programs encapsulate the core activities of the Network: Researcher Mobility, Workshops and Conferences, Postgraduate Education, and Knowledge Management Systems. The Network is expected to add significant value to pre-existing investments and raise the profile of Australian telecommunications research.

Recent studies however indicate that technical innovation in geographic clusters is lower than geographically dispersed companies, and that their competitiveness arises from innovations in tailoring products and marketing. The emergence of the ?Grid? enhances the capabilities of ?Virtual? Clusters. Through installation of a Grid Portal and Grid-enabling analysis tools, we export the capabilities of a geographical cluster around Europe's leading computational facility and contrast this with a Virtual Cluster in Australia, where we demonstrate an innovative application of High-Performance Computing to modelling consumer behaviour and managing customer relations.

Precise characterisation of advanced materials such as dielectrics and superconductors using the facility will progress emerging technologies within the electronic and communication research area. The inclusion of a microwave scanning test bed within the laboratory will allow engineers, scientists, biologists and medical scientists to safely detect the intrinsic electromagnetic properties of electronic materials and tumours in biological tissues or poor quality agricultural produce. This comprehensive material characterisation facility will therefore benefit the peoples of Australasia in many significant and diverse ways.
