The project intends to improve data structures to reduce the bottleneck effect caused by multiple processor cores. The hardware used for a typical server platform has increasing numbers of processor cores. This growing number of cores creates a bottleneck effect when accessing the data that are structured in the shared memory of these servers. These contended data structures limit the server performance and new algorithms are necessary. The project proposes to relax traditional consistency criteria to provide high concurrency and to leverage optimistic executions that proceed concurrently but may roll back depending on the conflicts with other concurrent executions they encounter. The concurrent data structures would allow application performance to scale with higher numbers of hardware cores.Read moreRead less
Integrating deep-earth and surface processes for frontier-basin exploration. It is well-known that mantle convection has a profound influence on basin evolution, and the next step will be to quantify this relationship and provide the science that will make these concepts applicable to exploration. It is well-known that mantle convection has a profound influence on basin evolution, and the next step will be to quantify this relationship and provide the science that will make these concepts applicable to exploration. To do this, we will develop a workflow to link plate-reconstruction software with the mantle convection modelling to link plate motions mantle convection and the history of sedimentation systematically for the first time for frontier basin-scale applications. We will apply these emerging technologies to the evolution of basins in the Arctic borderlands frontier for resource exploration and on the Australian continent.Read moreRead less

Safe, lasting storage of data, and efficient access to it, is vital for all aspects of computing, ranging from e-commerce applications, and data-management in governments. For the storage of data, persistent key-value stores are central in modern computing platforms. However, contemporary key-value stores have not been designed for emerging extreme heterogeneous computational systems with future hardware accelerators and storage capabilities, including graphics processor and flash-based memory. This project will devise an adaptive key-value store framework for heterogeneous systems. Our new framework will adaptively harvest the performance potential of future hardware such that applications can cope with fast-growing data sets.Read moreRead less
Investigations into machine learning applications in link analysis. Link analysis is an emerging tool for the detection of patterns in structured data. Link analysis is an emerging tool for the detection of patterns in structured data. The detection of pattern in such data can lead to the detection of fraud occurrence, security breaches in computer systems, and patterns of social interactions with a community. It is also popularly applied to applications such as Web search engine designs and marketing analysis. This project aims to advance the area of link analysis by allowing the incorporation of contextual information which accounts for relationships among actors properly. Advances in link detection will allow improvements in security and Web services on which a wide field of national bodies rely. This project can help to place Australia at the forefront of this research area.Read moreRead less

Earth processes over geological timescales cannot be understood outside of a plate tectonic context. However, no standard tool exists to explore the causes and effects of lithosphere-mantle interaction in accordance with past plate configurations. Our aim is to develop a Palaeo-Geographic Information System called EarthByte that will connect the open source and architecture-independent GPlates and GMT software, and implement XML-based service interfaces and databases. EarthByte will create the foundation for an e-geoscience framework for grid-based data access and Earth process modelling by linking geological and geophysical observations to palaeogeographic models for constraining mantle convection and lithospheric deformation.Read moreRead less

Vast sedimentary basins, fold belts and associated resources represent the main source of Australia's wealth, formed largely as consequences of major global tectonic events. We propose to connect two key national Simulation and Modelling infrastructures to a novel geodynamic modelling tool, developed specifically for modelling plate tectonics at the global and regional scale and suitable to unravel the causes and consequences of sudden global plate tectonic reorganizations. The knowledge-base derived from this work will considerably improve our understanding of catastrophic tectonic events affecting plate boundaries and plate interiors.Read moreRead less

This will form the basis for unravelling the effects of subduction on surface topography and sea-level change. The project outcomes will include predictive models of sedimentation and erosion in continental interiors, and will transform knowledge about the nature and magnitude of natural planetary change. International and Australian organizations are investing in large projects involving the collection of terabytes of scientific data. The Anglo-Australian Galaxy Redshift Survey in eastern Australia has obtained data for a quarter of a million galaxies. Similarly the Tropical Ocean Global Atmophere(TOGA) program is being expanded to collect data from the equatorial pacific region which will help better understand the El Nino/Southern Oscillation Cycle. We are developing powerful spatial data mining tools which will go a long way in finding potential nuggets of useful information in these large databases and help Australian and international scientists hypothesise new theories to explain the underlying phenomenon.Read moreRead less
