Insect age: an ecological genomics approach to understanding host-parasite interactions. The importance of insect age (or the age structure of a population of insects) in understanding relationships between insects and their abiotic and biotic environment has been stressed in many theoretical studies but seldom directly tested. The importance of insect age (or the age structure of a population of insects) in understanding relationships between insects and their abiotic and biotic environment has been stressed in many theoretical studies but seldom directly tested. This is because few tools exist that can accurately measure the age of a wild-caught insect with any accuracy. In this proposal we plan to use a genomics approach to develop tools that can be used to efficiently determine the age of an insect and then apply these tools to better understand the relationship between insect age and the ability of an insect to transmit pathogens to humans, livestock or plants. These tools will also have future applicability in developing new approaches to control insect transmitted disease as well as provide methodology to determine the effectiveness of current control programs that seek to kill pest insect populations of agricultural or public health significance.Read moreRead less

Coproantigen detection tests for diagnosis of intestinal parasitic nematode infection. The aim of this project is to develop new tests for detection of hookworm and Strongyloides, two common intestinal worm infections of humans. The aim of this project is to develop new tests for detection of hookworm and Strongyloides, two common intestinal worm infections of humans. These tests offer the potential to replace current tests, namely stool microscopy and serodiagnosis, both of whose performance is unsatisfactory due to deficiencies in sensitivity, specificity and operator convenience. The tests will rely on monoclonal antibodies to detect parasite products in stool. Such testing technology is amenable to configuration in a robust format, suitable for large-scale manufacture. Given the worldwide prevalence of these parasites, the tests will have a market potential of international significance.Read moreRead less
Development and commercialization of novel diagnostic assays for the early detection of acute dengue virus infection. Dengue is an emerging disease of the tropics and is endemic in more than 100 countries with up to 100 million cases annually. Of these, 500,000 result in dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a serious life-threatening complication of dengue virus infection. Of these, 500,000 result in dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a serious life-threatening complication of dengue virus infection. Dengue activity in northern Australia has increased in recent years with suggestions that it may be coming endemic in this country. Early diagnosis, using NS1 based assays should facilitate containment of such outbreaks through earlier identification, treatment, isolation and strategic mosquito control.Read moreRead less

This project will contribute to the development of a new generation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems that provide new and innovative features capable of significantly increasing the resolution and /or speed of imaging. The economic benefit of being a developer of this technology is clear and significant. These new systems will enhance the efficiency and power of clinical diagnostic testing. Specifically, the enabling of molecular imaging will enhance the study of many more disease states and rapid assessment of new in vivo therapeutic agents. The side-stream benefit to biomedical research and development in Australia is therefore substantial. Read moreRead less

This project aims at expanding the pool of drug targets, by extending drug screening to protein-protein interaction networks. This project aims to assemble a novel technical platform to detect binding between proteins, using a combination of cell-free protein expression, AlphaScreen and single-molecule fluorescence. This pipeline has great potential to accelerate the exploration of protein networks, and provides also a generic platform for drug screening on difficult targets. The project intends to screen Phylogica's libraries of peptides called Phylomers to discover tight binders to a Transcription Factor, Sox18. The objective of this project is to determine which Phylomers can disrupt specific interactions between Sox18 and its binding partners involved in lymphangiogenesis.Read moreRead less
A microfluidic array of phylomers for rapid discovery of peptide probes and biomarkers. This project, through an alliance with Phylogica, aims at exploiting a unique source of structural diversity for drug discovery, harvesting the creativity of nature in its most exotic places. The project will develop a novel approach to validate design and validate drug candidates, by gathering them on a single screening chip for a powerful discovery platform.

Provision of water for agricultural, industrial and residential use is becoming increasingly difficult in Australia. By determining the need for important migratory fish species to have access to marine conditions, this project aims to assist managers to identify river systems where changing flow patterns will be particularly detrimental. The project will provide information about the need for artificial opening of estuary mouths, fish ladders and other practical means to ensure the continued survival of these species. Healthy ageing in men is largely overlooked. Disorders of continence are surprisingly common with increasing age, and are socially debilitating. To understand changes in continence and address healthy ageing it is first necessary to gain an understanding of continence mechanisms in healthy men. Continence in women has received wide attention, but anatomy and function differ, as do the challenges throughout life (childbirth vs. prostate disease). Using novel methods we will test a new hypothesis of male continence with the goal to provide new physiological discoveries, new methods, and baseline data upon which strategies to enhance healthy ageing and reduce the economic burden of disorders of continence can be developed and refined.
