Mechanisms of human immunodeficiency virus entry into cells. This project will develop an understanding of how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) evolves in people to become better able to infect, and hence destroy, cells of the immune system. It is expected that new knowledge into how HIV alters the way it interacts with these cells will reveal insights for the design of vaccines, drugs and new diagnostic tests.

Summary
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th most common cause of cancer death in Australia. The causes of this disease are largely unknown. I am conducting research designed to understand genetic and environmental causes of pancreatic cancer. Skin cancer occurs more frequently than any other cancer in Australia. Sunlight is the most common cause but it is also possible that human papilloma viruses may play a role. If high risk types of this virus can be identified, new preventive strategies may be developed.

It is not possible to test the vaccines in people for their effectiveness against avian influenza infection prior to a disease outbreak, so an animal model for the disease will be used to assist in optimizing the formulation of flu vaccines and in testing their efficacy in preventing infection or reducing the severity of disease. Ferrets are natural hosts for flu viruses, have similar responses to vaccination as people, and develop a similar disease to humans when infected with influenza. Consequently, additional drug targets are required to continue the successful treatment of HIV-1 infected patients. This research is focused on a large polyprotein produced by HIV called Gag. One end of Gag contains a smaller protein called P1 that is crucial for the ability of HIV to reproduce itself. Small changes to the genetic makeup of P1 (one or two amino acids) lead to a defective virus that cannot replicate. The apparent integral role of P1 in viral replication makes it an excellent target for anti-retroviral therapy. Dengue is an emerging disease of the tropics and is endemic in more than 100 countries with up to 100 million cases annually. Of these, 500,000 result in dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a serious life-threatening complication of dengue virus infection.
