Returning WA Rapid Acquisition Fluorescent Microscopy to the cutting edge. The equipment proposal aims to establish West Australia's only super-rapid-speed, high throughput confocal microscopy facility. The technology will provide researchers in biotechnology, medicine, environmental biology and agriculture with contemporary state-of-art opportunities to analyse living cells and/or large-area tissue specimens in three-dimensions with the highest possible speed and high-resolution. West Australia hosts 1 twelve-year old historic rapid-acquisition confocal microscope that is heavily subscribed, no longer manufactured and prone to regular, prolonged, costly breakdowns. Accessing high-speed confocal systems in other states is not a viable option putting WA-based researchers at a significant disadvantage.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish a centre for targeted and exploratory metabolic phenotyping. Metabolic phenotyping quantitatively measures the precursors, intermediates and products of metabolism interacting within a biological system. This project will use high-resolution spectrometry and spectroscopy to generate comprehensive, multi-parameter metabolite data sets for biological samples at the population level, at unprecedented throughput and low cost, to address biological and biomedical research needs. This project is expected to make Australian scientists globally competitive in the life sciences including biological, clinical and biomedical, plant and crop sciences, analytical chemistry, toxicology, agriculture, wildlife conservation and sports science, and to drive advances in the data sciences for systems biology.Read moreRead less

Internationally, T-rays represent a rich new science leading to advanced forms of biophotonics, biomedical imaging and spectroscopy. Non-invasive T-ray diagnostics of nano- and bio-materials are being hotly pursued. The outcome will be a strategically important Australian T-ray facility that will provide immediate and transparent nationwide access. Historically, industry is transformed every time a new part of the electromagnetic spectrum becomes accessible - T-rays are the next frontier.Read moreRead less
