High Energy Heavy Ions in Materials Science. The outcome of this project is to develop a more accurate predictor of the rate of energy loss of high energy heavy ions in solids which will have profound implications in the use of these particles in ion implantation, materials analysis and medical physics applications. It will contribute to the development of new high technology materials and to the application of high energy ions to medical treatment procedures.

A novel approach using refractive index gradients will be used to capture scintillator light while rejecting noise. New knowledge will be gained of the mechanisms of radiation damage in scintillators and glasses. The small, flexible, accurate fibre optic dosimeters will be equivalent in absorbing characteristics to human tissue, making them superior to all currently available dosimeters. Fibre optic dosimeters will enable new adaptive radiotherapy techniques and provide quality assurance of dose delivery in radiotherapy. Their multiplexing capability will lead to applications in monitoring of workplaces and aerospace environments.Read moreRead less

Magnetic biosensing: developing high frequency spintronic sensors for magnetic label detection. This project builds upon recent advances in nano-magnetism to develop novel, miniaturised, electronic biosensors. Such biosensors will one day enable the production of portable devices for rapid, on-site detection of cancer and other diseases, thereby reducing reliance on costly laboratory based analyses and improving remote and rural healthcare.

This project will develop new theoretical concepts and models for the electronic properties of organic molecular crystals. The theoretical predictions will be tested experimentally at the USA National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
The outcome will be a better understanding of a wide range of materials (including high-temperature superconductors, giant magnetoresistance and plastic electronic materials) that could be the
basis of much of the electronic technology of the twenty-first century.Read moreRead less
