Development of dense gas technology platforms for the formulation of oral vaccines. This project will aim to develop a technology platform that enables the formulation of vaccines that can be delivered orally and this research has the potential to radically change existing vaccination regimens. The availability of needle-free vaccination also has potential for considerable societal and economic impact in developing countries.
Rapid Pathogen Detection using Super-Sensitive Multiplexing Nanophotonic Probes. Responding to an urgent need to advance rapid molecular diagnostics, this project aims to explore new photonics and biochemistry approaches to DNA recognition. It is anchored on proprietary light-emitting nanodots which have single-molecule sensitivity in conjunction with tunable optical identities. The project aims to develop a multiplexing reagent library of DNA probes to sense trace DNA molecules and to recognise ....Rapid Pathogen Detection using Super-Sensitive Multiplexing Nanophotonic Probes. Responding to an urgent need to advance rapid molecular diagnostics, this project aims to explore new photonics and biochemistry approaches to DNA recognition. It is anchored on proprietary light-emitting nanodots which have single-molecule sensitivity in conjunction with tunable optical identities. The project aims to develop a multiplexing reagent library of DNA probes to sense trace DNA molecules and to recognise multiple pathogens in a single assay. This innovation aims to create a hybrid-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology platform for current industry-standard pathogen detection tests. The outcomes of the project aim to enable DNA based pathogen diagnostics within 90 minutes, four times faster than the current tests.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a new drug screening system using nanomaterials interfaced with advanced mass spectrometry to improve testing speed, cost, and accuracy, and minimise the distress associated with current drug testing programs within corrective services. Currently, testing programs are costly, with confirmation taking multiple weeks, preventing appropriate responses to drug use and support service recommendations. Additionally, vulnerable people in custody or on corrective orders find conventional urine testing distressing, especially when previously exposed to sexual violence. New accurate, rapid saliva testing on-site will revolutionise drug monitoring and provide an Australian designed solution for correctional jurisdictions. Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop instrumentation and techniques to image fully hydrated cellS for prolonged periods at room temperature in an environmental scanning electron microscope. Multiple fluorescent nano-particle labels will be used to image complex cellular structure and dynamics at ultra high spatial resolution. This innovative bio-imaging technique will be facilitated by the construction of a high speed light collection system that can efficiently operate at the pressures required to stablise water within the cell. Applications for this new bio-imaging technique will also be explored.Read moreRead less

The project will determine how the intrinsic physico-chemical properties of nanoparticles translate into extrinsic biological properties through their interaction with physiological proteins in the body. This process is complex and poorly understood due to our inability to visualise it through standard imaging techniques. The project aims to develop a new tool to visualise, study, quantify and design the protein ‘corona’. These are the adsorbed protein layers that are rapidly formed in contact with biological liquids which allow cells to recognise and process nanoparticles. The proteins are dependent on factors such as size, shape, surface chemistry and biological history of the particles. Being able to ‘read’ and ‘write’ the protein corona would enable efficient cellular targeting of pharmaceutical drugs.Read moreRead less
