Dynamic relations between values and consumer behaviour: age and life-stage. This project aims to understand the complex relations between people’s life goals and their consumption behaviour, exploring age, life-stage and cohort effects. The intended outcomes of the project include a state-of-the-art interactive values-based website, basic knowledge about Australian values, values change and value-related behaviour, and business insight into value-based marketing. This project aims to apply the ....Dynamic relations between values and consumer behaviour: age and life-stage. This project aims to apply the knowledge gained from a large scale study into Australian values and value change across the adult life-span in order to understand how people’s values influence their consumer and other decisions; providing information that will enable Australian organisations to improve their marketing activities and the nature of their promotional appeals.Read moreRead less
Validation of Synthetic Regional Gravity Field Models. This research will further develop the theoretical and practical methods required to test any model of the Earth's gravity field. Previously, geodesists have had to rely on analytical error estimates, usually based on observed data. A synthetic Earth gravity model avoids this scenario by giving an exact validation technique of the methods used. A synthetic Earth gravity model avoids this scenario by giving an exact validation technique of the methods used. The synthetic model will allow users of geoid models (e.g., for GPS heighting) to have much more confidence in their results. When used with a precise geoid model, GPS is faster and cheaper than conventional spirit-levelling, offering around 800% productivity gains. Read moreRead less
Seasonal adjustment using disaggregated short time span data. Seasonally adjusted economic and social times series are vital information used by governments and businesses in decision making. This project will develop statistical methods to estimate and remove seasonal factors from economic and social time series using finely disaggregated data for a relatively small number of time periods. This will enable better and quicker estimation of seasonal factors when new series are introduced or there ....Seasonal adjustment using disaggregated short time span data. A portable laser scanning facility for geomatic data capture. Ground-based laser scaning is an emerging technology that promises to revolutionize spatial data capture for the geomatics industry due to its high data volume, accuracy and acquisition rate. This proposal brings together leading academics from Australasia to establish a laser scanning facility that will enhance existing projects and explore new avenues in geomatic research. The facility will impact on the research programs of participating institutions in the fields of high-resolution thematic mapping and visualization, environmental geomatics, geomatic monitoring and geomatic engineering. Furthermore, the facility will allow Australasian universities to develop a knowledge base in this new and exciting technology.Read moreRead less
Analysing global consumption patterns with a large number of commodities. This project provides estimates of the income and price sensitivities of consumption, for a large number of finely distinguished goods, across most countries. These, together with new ways of enhancing economic data (by recognising quality improvements of goods and uncertainty), will be of value to researchers, government and business.
Funding our future: perceptions of the value of financial planning advice. This project will examine how perceptions of the value of financial planning advice are formed over time. If this is understood then both government and the industry can develop better strategies to encourage those who can benefit from financial advice to recognise and gain value from the service.
Extending the theory and measurement of personal values and testing relations of values to attitudes and behaviour. Personal values indicate what is important to us, guide our behaviour and reflect real differences between cultures, social classes, occupations, and religions. This project seeks to refine the theory and measurement of personal values across cultures to better understand the motivations that lie behind attitudes and behaviours.
Redefining Temperature. The international system of units, which is at the basis of every accurate measurement, requires coherent definitions for its basic units (eg. metre, second, kelvin). Unfortunately, at the moment this is not so, and a global call has gone out to redefine every basic unit in terms of fundamental constants, which are by definition the same anywhere and anytime. This project will develop a new laser-based approach to measuring temperature which can be widely deployed and us ....Redefining Temperature. This project will develop a new laser-based approach to measuring temperature which can be widely deployed and uses fundamental principles for its operation: this can bring accuracy to thermometry in industry for the first time. These outcomes will generate high-level recognition for this Australian project and provide opportunities for high level research training.Read moreRead less
Magnetic and electric field tuneable magnetic heterostructures. Australian science and technology will be a leading participant in the creation of a new, useful magneto-electric composite material whose properties arise from careful atomic level design. Australian science and technology will be a leading participant in the creation of a new, useful magneto-electric composite material whose properties arise from careful atomic level design. This goal has been long sought after, and only recently come within reach. Recent proof-of-concept demonstrations have inspired an explosion of activity on a global scale together with intensive searches for additional examples of useful material combinations. In this project, young Australian scientists and research students will have opportunities to receive training and become involved in a National Priority Frontier Technology rich in possibilities for generation of intellectual property.Read moreRead less
