Operations research without convexity. Operations Research (OR) is one of the most applicable areas of mathematics and of importance for the future of technologically advanced Australia. However, applications of OR often require convexity. This is a serious limitation. A new approach, monotonic analysis, which is applicable to a broad class of nonconvex problems, was given birth by the CI. Promising results have been obtained and leading researchers around the world (including the Presidents of the Canadian Mathematical and French Applied Mathematics Societies) are keen to work with the CI developing this topic. This project both cements and extends world leadership in this field.Read moreRead less
Conformal invariance and stationary states. Universal properties in nonequilibrium processes, such as scaling of space and time, suggest the existence of a fundamental, model independent theory describing such phenomena. An analogous theory for equilibrium phenomena exists, namely conformal field theory, and is extremely important for our understanding. Using recent insights this project aims at formulating such a theory for universal nonequilibrium behaviour.

With the recent advances in sequencing technology, the amount of biological sequence data available has increased tremendously. Extraction of knowledge from such data has lagged behind, awaiting the development of new automated methods for extracting meaning from the sequences. This project aims to develop fast and flexible algorithms for discovery of patterns in DNA and protein sequence data and to find families of sequences that share similar patterns. Association of these patterns with features of 3-dimensional structures of protein families and their functional characteristics can contribute towards the understanding of the relationship between primary structure and function of a protein.Read moreRead less
A paradigm of genomic discovery - an investigation of the allelic architecture of height. Understanding the complexities of the human body from its DNA sequence has proven difficult. Understanding the complexities of the human body from its DNA sequence has proven difficult. Genomic discovery is best developed using stable, easily measurable and highly heritable characteristics such as height. By taking advantage of 2 large population surveys of adult and adolescent stature we shall apply modern molecular techniques and statistical strategies to identify and characterise the exact changes in DNA that determine height. This work builds on substantial preliminary leads from unique resources and complementary expertise in the scientific specialties. The results from this work will inform other genomic research and provide information about growth and bone biology.Read moreRead less

The project is designed to develop mathematical models of the complex biological processes of leg ulcer formation and healing. The project intends to combine mathematical techniques from fluid dynamics, mathematical biology, numerical analysis and statistical inference to develop novel, multiphase, validated mathematical models that capture the complex spatiotemporal evolution of cellular and chemical species during the formation and healing of a leg ulcer – biological processes which are currently poorly understood. The mathematical models are expected to provide new insight into the underlying biological mechanisms of leg ulcers and may ultimately improve management of chronic wounds.Read moreRead less

Approximately 15,000 individuals in Australia are currently HIV infected. Gene therapy has the capacity to remove antiretroviral treatment related issues, dramatically decrease treatment costs and simplify treatment of HIV.
In this study we will model a new approach to treat HIV in which the patient's own cells are used as the therapy by incorporating an anti-HIV gene. These cells are then re-introduced into the patient.
The strong mathematical focus of this project, and its application to a promising approach against HIV, will place Australia at the forefront of the mathematics of gene research and contribute to the National Priority Area of Promoting and Maintaining Good Health and the Priority Goal of Preventative Healthcare.

The CI is in the happy circumstance of having almost completed (now in the proof reading stage) a large monograph on random matrices commissioned by Princeton University Press. This gives great international profile to the CI, and more generally Australian mathematical sciences in the subject matter of the proposal. To build on this base it is essential that significant new results, impacting on the work of others, continue to be obtained by the CI. All indications are that the new ideas relating integrable structures and random matrices underpinning this proposal will fulfil this goal. For the postdoctral researcher involved the stimulating atmosphere of discovery should provide ideal training in mathematical research.Read moreRead less
