The fields of nanotechnology, quantum technology and quantum information processing are rapidly converging. This project aims to provide a novel approach in the fundamental understanding of quantum computation/information by using methods inspired by mathematics of evolutionary competition. The project will contribute towards the theoretical foundations of quantum computation by complementing efforts of several groups in Australia collaborating on the experimental design of quantum computers. The outcome of this project will contribute towards the successful operation of quantum computers and will help maintain Australia's position in the global forefront of quantum computation/information.

Advanced algorithms for statistical mechanical models. Polymer science, percolation theory and models of magnetism are at the forefront of lattice statistical mechanics and condensed matter theory. Numerical techniques to determine the behaviour of model systems in these areas are predominantly Monte Carlo methods, series generation and analysis, or based on partition function zeroes. New algorithms have been developed for all three methods that are vastly more efficient than their predecessors. ....Advanced algorithms for statistical mechanical models. Numerical techniques to determine the behaviour of model systems in these areas are predominantly Monte Carlo methods, series generation and analysis, or based on partition function zeroes. New algorithms have been developed for all three methods that are vastly more efficient than their predecessors. Coupled with the availability of dramatically increased computer power, this project takes advantage of a unique position to make dramatic advances in the afore-mentioned research areas. Furthermore, the methods have wider applicability than those mentioned.Read moreRead less
The aeronomy of the atmosphere between 50 and 110 km. Signals of climate change in the 50 to 110 km height region of the atmosphere are becoming more evident. This region shields the surface from extreme UV radiation and so understanding any changes in the region is important for life. We will improve our understanding of the region and look for additional evidence of changes. We will also contribute to improvements in numerical weather prediction models.

Advanced Studies of Non-Perturbative Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and Relation to the Standard Model. The project is a high-precision study of nonperturbative quantum electrodynamics (QED). It will finally allow a detailed look into the inner workings of the "best theory we have". It will provide valuable guidance in understanding and constructing the "holy grail" of theoretical physics the so-called "theory of everything". In order to test fundamental quantum field theories, which underlie all physical phenomena from galaxy formation to the behaviour of biological system, it is necessary to be able to solve these theories in all regions of interest. In particular, solving theories in the nonperturbative regime has proven a difficult and challenging problem. The most successful theory that we have in physics is perturbative quantum electrodynamics, even though in the nonperturbative regime it is widely believed to be a trivial or pathological theory. We will build on exciting recent successes in this field and use advanced supercomputers to understand the detailed nonperturbative behaviour of quantum electrodynamics.Read moreRead less

We will use a unique array of instruments deployed across Australia to study how this region responds to waves generated in the lower atmosphere and to changes in electromagnetic energy from the sun and particle precipitation from the magnetosphere. Outcomes will help our understanding of how the region is responding to rising levels of greenhouse gas concentrations. Cooling effects are already apparent and our research will look for additional evidence of change.Read moreRead less

String Theory, known to the general public as the "Theory of Everything', is currently an extremely active area of research internationally. It has not only stimulated considerable interaction between mathematical physicists and mathematicians, but also increased public interest in science through television programs and books. Unfortunately, the majority of the Australian scientific community has not yet caught up with these developments. Our recent papers, all published in premier journals in this field, have not only received widespread international attention but have also increased the profile of String Theory amongst Australia's mathematicians and mathematical physicists. The proposed project is expected to continue this trend.Read moreRead less
Twisted K-theory and its application to String Theory and Conformal Field Theory. String Theory is, at present, the only consistent theory of quantum gravity. Recently, twisted K-theory was proposed as the algebraic structure underlying the classification of D-branes, i.e. solitonic extended objects, in certain closed string backgrounds. In this project we aim to advance our understanding of the properties of twisted K-theory in the context of String Theory and Conformal Field Theory. The ultimate goal is to find the appropriate K-theory classifying D-branes in arbitrary closed string backgrounds or, similarly, classifying boundary Conformal Field Theories. It has already emerged that the K-theory of C*-algebras will play an important role.Read moreRead less
