This project addresses a range of key issues relevant to crystalline silicon solar cells bound by the common feature of reducing the cost of solar photovoltaic electricity by fabricating thin films of good-quality polycrystalline silicon on cheap glass substrates. The project is significant because thin-film polycrystalline silicon solar cells on glass can dramatically lower the cost of solar electricity. However, at present such cells are not yet produced industrially. This project is expected to lead to major scientific/technical advances with this hugely promising power generation technology, and to bring forward the industrial mass production of these urgently needed devices.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to integrate large capacity SMES with Active Power Filter (APF) switching technology to achieve a complete power quality control device.
The expected outcomes of the research are 1) An SMES design suitable for APF integration, 2) Development and implementation of lossless energy switching technologies, 3) Development of suitable APF switching algorithms, 4) An integrated design with competitive commercial analysis, and 5) A fully characterised prototype.
This project is innovative as the marriage of large capacity SMES with APF switching technology is essentially absent from the literature, and so there are high expectations for innovative applications and methodologies of fabrication.

This project aims to address back electrode material, a bottleneck functional material in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs). By engineering printable and conductive materials based on carbon and gold nanowires, the project expects to enable highly-efficient and scalable PSCs while reducing cost of materials and production. These expected outcomes are to be implemented in PSCs and their impact rigorously tested in research cells to large-area PSCs modules produced through industry-relevant, scalable, and low-cost printing and coating methods. This will provide significant benefits to Australian industry, from small to medium enterprises to larger utility power companies, while creating economic opportunities and enabling sustainable societies.Read moreRead less

Security, defence, agriculture, medicine are a few of the fields where THz science and technology are booming. THz developments offer enhanced national security, prosperity and quality of life. Australia has active researchers in THz concentrated at several centres across the country, but they are hampered by their work by lack of access to state-of-the art experimental equipment. This project will provide that equipment and ensure the nation remains internationally competitive in this rapidly-developing field.Read moreRead less

We will start with a new fundamental study of the interaction of light and matter to explicate the phenomena of the emission, transmission and detection of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. Using our increased understanding of terahertz science, we will then engineer better terahertz sources, optics, and sensors. Better terahertz technology will open up new applications in medical diagnosis, especially dermatology; industrial productivity, such as quality control; and the detection of contraband, including illicit drugs and explosives. In maintaining good health, transforming industries and safeguarding Australia, advanced terahertz systems will bring the nation health, economic and security benefits.Read moreRead less
