This is a time of enormous and rapid change in many areas of Australian business due to the introduction and widespread dissemination of digital media. It has resulted in the accumulation of large integrated databases of customer information and their transactions. Firms in all countries, particularly those challenged by distance and size, like Australia, are now seeking to find ways to make better use of their voluminous information so as to make efficiency gains in their business processes, strategic decision-making and customer relationship management. Our project aims to contribute to the ARC priority research goal of smart information use by developing new methodologies for the analysis of these large integrated databases.

The principal aim of this project is to develop reliable and valid ways to model individual level choice processes. Once completed, this will provide insights into ways to aggregate sampled observations when population-level applications are required, and allow us to compare and test several competing theories of choice behaviour. This will enable us to make contributions to understanding and modelling human decision making in many fields ranging from marketing to medicine.

The proposed method will be empirically tested in the context of surveys investigating sustainable tourism, public acceptance of alternative water sources and volunteering, three areas which are central to maintaining Australia's environmental sustainability and providing social and environmental services which are not covered by the commercial sector.

These tasks represent fundamental methodological research. The scientific significance consequently lies in knowledge development and methodological improvement. Findings will also enable both academic researchers using market segmentation methodology as well as practitioners applying such techniques to significantly improve the quality of their market structure analyses.
