Submerged cultural landscapes and the underwater heritage of Sea Country. This project aims to substantially extend our knowledge of the vast but poorly characterised submerged cultural landscapes on the Australian continental shelf, which remains one of the critical gaps in Australian archaeology. Original fieldwork will target locations in Western Australia and the Northern Territory to enrich and contextualise the submerged archaeological record within the broader discourse. Original fieldwork will target locations in Western Australia and the Northern Territory to enrich and contextualise the submerged archaeological record within the broader discourse. The project will combine archaeology, marine science and Indigenous knowledge to enhance our understanding of Pleistocene and early Holocene human-environment dynamics. Research will be undertaken in partnership with Traditional Owners and will support a national policy for the protection of Indigenous underwater cultural heritage.Read moreRead less

The Internet based e-services are being used by many businesses as part of the modern e-business environment. Management of e-services over the Internet involves complex correlation of events, and their sequences over geographically dispersed networks, systems and software applications. The integration of management information is a challenging problem due to the semantic differences of services across different business sectors (e.g., healthcare, retail and telecommunications). This project aims to develop a new framework for the integrated management of networked services using multiple software agents; some of them are already a part of the current Internet infrastructure (e.g., search engines).Read moreRead less

This project aims to determine how fisheries compliance can be improved with behavioural interventions. Poaching is the most tenacious problem hindering sustainable fisheries worldwide, yet efforts to reduce non-compliance often fail due to limited understanding of how to influence behaviour. This project will draw on key theories and methods from behavioural science to empirically assess how social norms interventions influence fisher compliance in a range of coral reef fisheries. This will significantly improve our understanding of how to lever psychological, social, and cultural dimensions to reduce poaching. Ultimately, this project will contribute practical guidance to influence behaviours in fisheries and other environmental contexts.Read moreRead less
Establishing a global framework to trace the provenance of seafood. The global importance and demand for seafood is higher than ever; yet, sustainable seafood production is threatened by seafood fraud. The global importance and demand for seafood is higher than ever; yet, sustainable seafood production is threatened by seafood fraud. This research will develop a new technology that will trace the geographic origins of seafood from catch to table and empower authorities to combat fraud. In doing so, this research will use natural chemical variation in biominerals to build maps of ocean chemistry and create universal markers of seafood provenance. These markers will be intrinsically tamper-proof: enabling the chemical geolocation of seafood across international trade routes. The outcome of this research will address a global environmental challenge and, in doing so, deliver benefits to the Australian economy, consumer and environment. Read moreRead less

A crucial question in ecology is the ?characteristic? scale or scales at which a system should be observed to most clearly observe its deterministic dynamics. We propose to modify methods recently developed for model ecosystems so they may be applied to real ecosystems, assess the performance of these measures in identifying unambiguous length scales, and ascertain what these scales reveal about the underlying ecology. The work will provide significant advances to important applied scaling questions such as the optimal size of reserves and ecosystem management ?units?, and the appropriate scale of observation to detect deterministic trends in ecosystem dynamics.

Unravelling the synergistic effect of ocean acidification and pore water advection on carbonate sediment dissolution: a global sink for CO2? The purpose of this project is to investigate the role of ocean acidification and pore water advection on the release of calcium and alkalinity from carbonate sediments. The expected outcomes of this project is a better understanding of the role of carbonate sediments in buffering ocean acidification and the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

This project extends a model of eResearch that has been demonstrated between the UK and Australia in a collaboration between the UK National eScience Centre and Curtin University that modelled consumer behaviour in telecommunications and financial services markets using Grid technologies. The INWA (Innovation Node – Western Australia) Grid was extended to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in January 2005 and now offers the potential for applying these techniques to emerging markets within China. Modelling and understanding these dynamics within the most rapidly developing economy in the world provides a number of valuable outputs but will also allow a Grid support for collaborative eResearch across three continents to be tested and developed.Read moreRead less

This research will make significant contributions to planning for An Environmentally Sustainable Australia. Key outcomes will include guidelines for including, for the first time, the patch dynamics of coral bleaching and pelagic productivity in conservation planning. By using an Australian icon, the Great Barrier Reef, as the case study for this research, the findings will be directly applicable and implementable. Furthermore, this study will result in an understanding of the potential effect of climate change on patch dynamics, and will provide guidelines and theory for planning for such changes. This research will enable Australia to effectively protect its biodiversity and to relate this knowledge to its neighbours.Read moreRead less
Palladium Based Mobile Agent System for Collaborative Environments. This project aims to (a) develop a Palladium based mobile agent methodology and System for collaborative environments and to (b) construct a testbed that involves the creation of Palladium and mobile agent system to test it on "Virtual Community", that is, a real commercial application provided by our partner investigator for proof of concept.

The offshore outsourcing of business processes is a new, largely unexplored and under-theorised area that is placing great pressure on Australian organisations. This research aims to develop models of best practice for offshoring by Australian organisations through a series of cases studies commencing with the industry partner, Repcol Limited. The research will identify what business processes are core, what processes can be offshored, whether to use third parties or have captive operations, and what factors need to be addressed in order to utilise offshoring to strengthen Australian organisations and enable them to take advantage of global strategic opportunities for growth.Read moreRead less
