The aim of the project is the growth of carbon thin films with a robust diamond-like structure for high performance electronic applications via the development of a new growth technique: Electric Field Induced Coupling (EFIC), which is based on liquid-phase layer-by-layer heteroepitaxial growth. The EFIC technique employing unique polarization-induced growth will significantly enhance technological output compared to existing technologies by overcoming current difficulties with expensive and complicated production methods. Ambient temperatures and pressures employed by the technique will enable us to form diamond-based semiconductors at low cost with sufficient speed and the properties required for industrial production.

This project is aimed at establishing the connections between local and global superconducting current-carrying abilities in magnesium diboride and high temperature superconducting tapes and wires. Local high-resolution magneto-optical imaging combined with transport current techniques will be employed. Super-current stream-lines and critical current density distributions will be quantitatively obtained from local magnetic flux behaviour. Pinpointing the connections is expected not only to promote production technology, but also to elucidate factors influencing the current-carrying ability in the tapes and wires.Read moreRead less
Stamp forming of lightweight fibre-metal laminate systems. A key criteria in the development of new vehicles is weight reduction. The aim of this project is to investigate the formability of fibre metal laminates (FMLs) for automotive applications. These hybrid material systems have significant advantages in terms of strength, weight, noise and impact reduction over metals. The major research issue addressed here is how can such materials be formed for volume production.

The aims of the project are to promote the development of the second generation of high-temperature superconductors for electrical power engineering, so-called "Coated Conductors", and to achieve enhancements of their characteristics for revolutionizing the world of the electricity, power, and energy handling. The comprehension of critical current density limiting mechanisms in films and multi-layers, as well as the construction of corresponding theoretical models will be the main scientific outcome of the project. The understanding of the interplay between fundamental and technological aspects will be a significant step towards the practical utilization of Coated Conductors.Read moreRead less
A Novel Approach to Determine Permeability for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Thermoplastic Matrix Composites. The permeability (resistance of a porous rigid body to a permeating fluid) is an essential parameter for predicting impregnation quality in processing of thermoplastic composite materials. No reliable method exists yet to estimate permeabilities without time-consuming and cost intensive experiments. The aim of the proposed research project is to obtain a basic knowledge in determining permeabilities of fibre architectures by taking into account their stochastic properties. An innovative approach, based on characterisations of meso-structures of fibre network and simulation of computational fluid dynamics, will be developed to accurately determine permeabilities. The outcome will enable more cost-effective manufacturing of thermoplastic matrix composites.Read moreRead less
Development of a Cost-Effective Organic-Inorganic Nanocomposite for High Quality Gravure Printing. Gravure printing is the printing process of choice for long runs and high quality. The conventional process involves the manufacture of copper-plated, chrome-coated cylinders into which the desired image is engraved. The cylinders have high manufacturing and operating costs. The chemicals used in the process are highly toxic and therefore pose major threats to humans and environment. This proposal outlines the first attempts to develop a new and innovative hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposite material to replace the copper plating and chrome coating. The success of the project will offer high quality, affordable and environmentally friendly printing service to both local and international clientele.

The proposed project aims to develop an analytical model that can predict the time-dependent deformations in post-tensioned concrete slabs considering concrete shrinkage and creep, cracking, and bond-slip behaviour. Over the past several years, numerous cases have been reported in Australia and elsewhere, of flexural elements for which the calculated deflection is far less than the actual deflection leading to serviceability problems. The significance of this investigation hence lies in its potential to provide a solution to more accurately predict service-life deflections in post-tensioned concrete suspended slabs and validate the model with real-life deflections monitored over time on a current building project.Read moreRead less

Functionally graded interfaces are a technologically new way of joining materials in a wide range of biomedical and industrial applications. The reduction in the interfacial stresses resulting from the graded interface increases the structural integrity of the component, however, existing models do not fully address issues of plasticity and cyclic fatigue to their fracture. The intention of this study is to investigate how modifications to the ductile reinforcement phase and how the cyclic loading influence crack extension within a graded interface. These results will assist in future design and prediction of the in-service lifetime of components containing gradient interfaces.Read moreRead less
