The aim of this project is to develop an actuator with high performance and power-to-weight ratio, suitable for use in cutting-edge applications. In the first instance, the focus will be on developing an automotive mirror actuator in close collaboration with the industrial partner, but the generic research outcomes will be applicable to development of actuators for other purposes. The new generation actuators will contribute to Australian manufacturing exports to become internationally competitive.Read moreRead less

Using variable-speed drives can save significant amounts of energy. These drives utilise motors and power electronics to operate the system at the highest efficiency. However, the high cost of such drives is the most important issue restricting their wider application. Although the cost of power electronics has dropped substantially in recent years, the motor cost has been relatively unchanged. To address this issue, we propose an innovative motor construction method using soft magnetic composites materials, which is simpler and provides higher assembly tolerances. The method will reduce the motor manufacturing cost and improve its efficiency and so make the use of variable speed drives more attractive in many other drive applications.Read moreRead less

Typically it is used for manufacturing management to improve factory floor operations in large companies. To achieve its full potential in small and medium enterprises (SME's) they need to align their management control systems with the TOC approach. Using an action research approach this project will meet these challenges. In particular, an exemplar accounting and performance measurement system will be designed for planning, control and decision-making.Read moreRead less

Electric motors are widely used in industry. Traditional maintenance approaches have involved regular overhauls/inspections and replacement after a fixed period. On-line condition monitoring involves taking non-invasive measurements to determine the motor's "health" and only scheduling maintenance when required. The benefits are reduced unexpected failures and reduced maintenance costs due to the greater maintenance intervals. The majority of existing work on condition monitoring has looked at using a single sensor type (eg. vibration) for fault prediction. The proposed work seeks to improve the reliability and accuracy of fault diagnosis by correlating information from multiple sensor types, which can be accessed remotely.Read moreRead less

The introduction of multimedia services for mobile users has resulted in a shortage of satellite spectrum. Spot beam technology is used to provide service in areas of high user density. Adjacent overlapping beams are allocated different frequency bands, however interference from neighbouring beams limits capacity. Multi-User Detection is a technology capable of significantly increasing capacity by frequency re-use in adjacent spot beams. The aim of this project is to investigate receiver design for multi-user spot-beam channels and develop associated synchronisation and channel estimation methods. The outcome will be efficient communications systems supporting higher user populations, without increasing the bandwidth required.Read moreRead less
Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. The sub band Signal To Noise Ratio in an OFDM communications channel varies by as much as 30 dB. In order to optimise the bandwidth efficiency of OFDM signalling it is desirable to adapt the chosen modulation technique such as M-ary QAM to the SNR available in sub bands. In this way high quality channels transmit the highest bit rates, whilst low quality channels accommodate the lowest bit rates. The net result is that the capacity of the communications link ....Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. Distortion effects in satellite amplifiers have a serious impact upon communication system performance, for example, by increasing the error rates.
The research study we are proposing involves analysing these distortion causing non linear effects and designing techniques to compensate for them. Although we are initially interested in the nonlinear satellite channel, we intend the results to be extended to other difficult nonlinear channels such as will be present in future 3G and 4G mobile communication systems.
The proposed research will place Australia at the forefront of cutting edge Information Technology and Communications research.

Efficient integration of redundant information in an EMB system is expected to significantly improve the reliability and fault tolerance of such systems. The need for costly and complicated clamp force measurement sensors in electric callipers will also be eliminated by accurate estimation of the clamp force signal, through fusion of more readily available measurements. Development of the proposed data fusion techniques influences the design of future EMBs and enhances the functionality of existing brake-by-wire systems.Read moreRead less

Electric machines consume about 70% of all electrical energy generated. Amorphous iron is normally difficult to cut accurately into the shapes required in electric machines. We propose to design and construct high-efficiency permanent magnet machines based on amorphous iron for automotive applications, which will be cut using an innovative Australian waterjet cutting technique. The key challenges are to optimise the machine design for commercial production given the capabilities and limitations of the material and the new cutting process.Read moreRead less
