Self-supervised feature learning for rapid processing of marine imagery. Fast and reliable quantitative estimates of marine environmental health are needed for scientific studies, design and management of protected areas, and regulatory compliance of industrial activity in the ocean. Fast and reliable quantitative estimates of marine environmental health are needed for scientific studies, design and management of protected areas, and regulatory compliance of industrial activity in the ocean. Australia is collecting seafloor images at increasing rates but expert annotations are not keeping up, meaning that typical machine learning approaches struggle. This project will develop self-supervised techniques that use large amounts of unlabeled data to enhance performance. Our design takes advantage of additional information available for marine imagery such as geolocation and remote sensing context. We will explore how these representations can guide additional sampling and improve performance in classification tasks.Read moreRead less
Autonomous repeatable surveys for long term monitoring of marine habitats. Australia has committed to using marine resources in a sustainable manner and to conserve the biodiversity of its marine habitats. In order to manage its marine environment effectively, marine scientists, managers and policy makers require timely and accurate information on the state of the environment. Current knowledge and techniques are limited and will have difficulty scaling to satisfy Australia's needs. A monitorin ....Autonomous repeatable surveys for long term monitoring of marine habitats. A monitoring system that relies on machines to perform a substantial fraction of survey work and basic data analysis can scale more easily and provide more information at lower costs. The project aims to develop a personalised music recommender system using perceived tone quality, affect and liking. Recommender systems using prior verbal annotations and ratings are common (Amazon) but inappropriate for less popular music by unfamiliar artists, which lacks social use data. The project intends to build on work into perception of musical affect and its relation to loudness and tone quality; and the automation of the organisation of digital libraries both by labels and acoustic content. Developing this, the project seeks to create a model that gives recommendations which accounts for an individual's preferences based on acoustic content, affect and liking. The system will be designed to update rapidly and to encourage exploration of familiar and unfamiliar music.Read moreRead less

This project provides benefits to the national priorities of a environmentally sustainable Australia; and frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industries. The project helpins students in Australia more deeply understand the sciences that underlie environmental sustainability. Learning with modelling and visualization technologies will help students learn important scientific knowledge and prepare them for the use of frontier technologies that are becoming infused into the practices of scientists and professionals in many fields. This project also directly contributes to the national Digital Education Revolution initiative.Read moreRead less
High Quality-of-Experience Real-time Video for Smart Online Shopping. This project aims to develop high quality-of-experience real-time video systems for smart shopping applications by devising new deep-neural-network-enhanced video delivery schemes. It will generate new knowledge of combined AI and network solutions to achieve high-quality and low-latency real-time video delivery, addressing unsatisfactory user experience intrinsically caused by network delay and bandwidth. Fundamental principles and an all-in-one platform will be developed to address research problems and the industrial partner’s practical problems. It will significantly benefit all shopping businesses and their customers in Australia, as well as all other video-related services (e.g., online education, video conferencing, etc.).Read moreRead less
Visual interaction methods for clustered graphs. This project aims to improve human understanding of huge network data sets, such as those arising in social networks, biological networks, and very large software structures. The project will enable analysts to explore and interact with such data sets, leading to better understanding.
Algebraic Methods in Design and Analysis of Stream Ciphers. The project investigates the problem of communication security in the mobile environment where both confidentiality and authenticity are of prime concern. Stream ciphers are a very natural choice in mobile environment as they provide an efficient cryptographic protection using a limited computing resources. We model stream cipher as a system of multivariate equations. In this approach, security of stream ciphers can be measured as the complexity of an algorithm that solves the appropriate system of equations. This project leads to new techniques for the design and analysis of stream ciphers.Read moreRead less
Multiliteracy testing: a criterion-referenced tool to assess secondary students’ multiliteracy learning within a technology-rich, multimodal domain. Evidence shows that while multimodal learning in schools is occurring, a valid measurement and diagnostic tool to provide reliable scores and accurate diagnostic information does not exist. This project aims to develop a criterion-referenced tool to measure students' multiliteracy learning within technology-rich, multimodal domains.
International collaboration in teaching and learning of Einsteinian physics. Following a previous project that showed that it is possible and beneficial to teach the modern Einsteinian paradigm of space, time, matter, light and gravity to students as young as 8 years old, this project aims to test and evaluate a seamless progression of learning modern physics through primary and secondary school. It will sequence, integrate and test research-informed teaching and learning materials, and assessme ....International collaboration in teaching and learning of Einsteinian physics. Following a previous project that showed that it is possible and beneficial to teach the modern Einsteinian paradigm of space, time, matter, light and gravity to students as young as 8 years old, this project aims to test and evaluate a seamless progression of learning modern physics through primary and secondary school. It will sequence, integrate and test research-informed teaching and learning materials, and assessment instruments developed through a 7-nation collaboration. Research across 24 schools will be reviewed by a panel drawn from professional organisations and curriculum authorities, and learning resources will be widely disseminated, with view to worldwide introduction of Einsteinian science at school.Read moreRead less
