Summary
We propose to identify novel heritable causes of intellectual disability using 22 large and well-characterised families from Australia. In these families we have refined the location of the genetic defect to the chromosome X and excluded the contribution of all so far known genes. We will achieve this using the technology of massive parallel sequencing. At the completion of the project we will have identified novel causes of intellectual disability and devised tests to identify them.
Operator-Analytic Methods in Telecommunication Systems. Many systems in information technology and telecommunications evolve under conditions of uncertainty. In this context, mathematical modelling is an essential component of the design process. Data Fusion Techniques for Electro-Mechanical Braking Systems. The main focus of this project is to develop data fusion techniques for clamp force estimation and optimum utilisation of redundant information in a brake-by-wire system. Efficient integration of redundant information in an EMB system is expected to significantly improve the reliability and fault tolerance of such systems. Advanced matrix-analytic methods with applications. Over the last twenty-five years, matrix-analytic methods have proved to be very successful in formulating and analysing certain classes of stochastic models. Motivated by applications, this project will investigate more advanced matrix-analytic methods than have hitherto been studied.
Normalizing XML Documents. Our work will be of great benefit, both to the research community and to the ICT industry. The project addresses one of the most important problems in XML usage and we expect our results to be published in important international forums, as has our preliminary research on the topic. This will significantly improve Australia's reputation in research in the ICT area. Characterisation of Internet Traffic Matrices. The benefits to the community of characterisation of Internet traffic matrices arise because this information is used in the design of efficient and reliable networks. This is a genuine example of using the data we have more cleverly, rather than throwing money at a problem. Better information will result in the Internet becoming more efficient, and therefore cheaper, and at the same time more reliable.
