Facility for Analyses of Evolutionary Immunology. Our understanding of how selection in natural populations shape (favour and disfavour) immunity, and how this process contribute to organismal (including human) fitness, is rudimentary. Will genetic rescue save the Tasmanian devil? This project aims to measure the long-term genetic impacts of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program’s ‘Wild Devil Recovery’ initiative. The project will determine whether supplementing small populations with individuals that are genetically diverse reduces inbreeding depression. The project will also monitor the impact of supplementation on the evolutionary trajectory of Devil Facial Tumour Disease. Acquisition of an advanced Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter for Tasmania. Tasmania has immediate need for contemporary flow cytometry infrastructure to maintain world-class research for local and global benefit. This project aims to establish next generation, single cell sorting capability to study the impact of ageing and environmental stressors on human, animal and plant biology.
