Summary
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training has an established track record in high-income countries of improving knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in relation to people with mental health problems. However, appropriateness of the course content and implementation models in middle-income countries is unknown. This project provides a unique opportunity to develop and pilot culturally appropriate MHFA training to improve population mental health in middle-income countries.

Safewards is a theory and specific strategies for inpatient mental health services, intended to create a safer and more supportive environment. Safewards was trialled in Victorian wards, this project will utilise the information collected in the trial. It aims to understand the impact of the implementation of Safewards from the perspectives of consumers and staff. Ultimately my research will provide evidence about the appropriateness of Safewards in Victorian mental health inpatient services.

Summary
The work outlined in the proposal will contribute to building research capacity in the key areas of population mental health literacy and stigma reduction. Trials in the areas of workplace mental health and mental health in young people will inform implementation of evidence-based interventions and support policy development. Previous research in workplace mental health will be extended into the under-researched area of prevention.
A critical psychological investigation of nurses' experiences, understandings and perceptions of nursing eating disordered patients. This innovative project will investigate the experiences, understandings and perceptions of nurses working with eating disordered patients in hospital contexts. Mental disorders and early substance abuse are the most important health problems affecting adolescents and young adults in Australia, yet we have no preventive interventions for mental disorders with strong and sustained effects. Around one half of all mental disorders begin at puberty. This proposal outlines plans for the first study to comprehensively study the onset of mental disorder at this time. It will lay a foundation for the next generation of prevention studies.
