Summary
Little is known about the rates of chronic and recurring mental illness in the Indigenous population, particularly in remote Indigenous communities. This research aims to document the extent of the problem and explore the factors that place individuals at risk of poorer mental health outcomes as well as those factors that promote resiliency and recovery in the face of such risk. In addition, the concept of recovery in mental illness will be expanded to include Indigenous views.

Safewards was trialled in Victorian wards, this project will utilise the information collected in the trial. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe, debilitating mental illness that has usual onset in adolescence. Research has highlighted the importance of adolescent brain development, particularly the maturation of brain connections, in onset of mental illness. Brain mapping techniques will be applied to gain a better understanding of BPD onset and progression within an approach that integrates neurobiology and psychosocial context. This is critical for understanding development of BPD.

The SMILES trial: “Supporting the Modification of lifestyle In Lowered Emotional States" is a randomised controlled trial that aims to investigate the efficacy and cost-efficacy of dietary improvement in the treatment of Major Depressive Episodes (MDE). My PhD is embedded within this RCT. We hypothesise that a structured dietary intervention, focusing on dietary improvement (a Modified Mediterranean diet), will be superior to a control condition (social support) in the treatment of MDE.

Our research will develop a sound evidence base on the profile of mental ill health, service use, pathways to care and mental health policy for people with intellectual disability. Schizophrenia is a devastating illness urgently requiring a new treatment approach. We have discovered that estrogen is an effective treatment for women with schizophrenia and are currently trialling a safer Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) known as brain estrogen� in postmenopausal women with schizophrenia. Regulatory permission is now available to trial the SERM in younger women, and we seek to extend our current SERM study into child bearing age women with schizophrenia.

I am a General Practitioner researcher focused on the problems related to chronic illness and social disadvantage. People living in disadvantaged circumstances suffer more chronic illnesses and the burden from those illnesses is greater for them. GPs trying to meet the needs of those patients face greater challenges. My research will identify strategies for enhancing the care provided and the experiences of patients in General Practice when faced with these difficulties.
