    Funding Amount
    $555,000.00
    Summary
Vibrational Spectroscopy and Imaging from Interstellar Dust to Life. The outcome of this project will result in a more thorough understanding of the role of water in the atmosphere and in the Greenhouse effect, and will provide information leading to more accurate modelling of Global warming. The results will also lead to new insights into interstellar chemistry, the chemistry of cometary dust and the origins of life.

Advanced waste slurry processing in the dairy industry. The dairy industry typically disposes of its wastes as low solids slurries. An aim for the future is to produce higher solids outputs. This project will examine the dewatering behaviour of a range of waste sludges and examine the molecular components that control dewaterability. The project will provide quantitative directions as to the best choice of dewatering methodologies to the dairy industry for the treatment and disposal of wastes .... ARC Centre of Excellence - Coherent X-ray Science. The twenty first century is said to be the century of biology. And there is no doubt that the development of our understanding of biological system is continuing at a massive rate. However as our understanding deepens, we need to draw on the whole range of scientific disciplines to proceed. This Centre draws together a multidisciplinary team of world-leading scientists to address one the key questions in modern biology, the structure of a membrane protein. We will develop techniques based on the latest developments in theoretical physics & chemistry, imaging, biology and technology - including the new Australian Synchrotron - to create new approaches to structural biology.

The processing of blue green algae rich waters and subsequent release of algal metabolites causes taste and odour problems and toxins that affect potable water safety. This project will define a preferred approach to the processing of these waters and provide quantitative analysis tools to help water authorities guarantee water quality and safety. The defined process routes and analysis procedures will also result in better water conservation (lower net water losses in processing). This will allow better regulation of water quality, safety and management by water authorities and improve consumer confidence in the potable water supply.

This proposal aims to develop new high performance adsorbents for bioprocess engineering based on templated nanoporous silica materials. This research will lead to significant advances in advanced materials and adsorbent technology, downstream processing for the biotechnology industries, and understanding of highly specific affinity interactions used for difficult bioseparations. It will have important benefits for processes involving protein purification, such as bioplasma processing, as well as flow on effects to other applications of adsorbent technology such as food processing and water treatment. The new adsorbents will lead to reductions in the costs, energy usage and waste generation of Australian industries.

Membrane Protein Structure and Interaction Facility. While it is estimated that a third of the human genome encodes for membrane proteins, the structures of only relatively few membrane proteins are currently known. It will be some time before membrane protein structure determination becomes routine, yet over 50% of the drugs on the market today rely on the activity of membrane proteins for their efficacy. It will be some time before membrane protein structure determination becomes routine, yet over 50% of the drugs on the market today rely on the activity of membrane proteins for their efficacy. This application seeks to establish a Membrane Protein Structure and Interaction Facility for the development and application of novel techniques and approaches to study the structure and interactions of membrane proteins. Research progress will be greatly enhanced by the establishment of this dedicated facility with cutting-edge technologies for the study of membrane proteins.
