These highly innovative devices and the materials that they are made from have enormous commercial potential in biomedical engineering. There is a strong potential for Australia to have an important stake in this area by combining expertise in engineering, chemistry and nanostructured materials.Read moreRead less
Bio-MEMS eye sensor for continuous monitoring of intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is a leading cause of preventable blindness, particularly prevalent in the 60+ population, caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Current treatment to monitor and prevent glaucoma-related blindness is by lowering IOP with eye-drops, laser therapy or surgery. This project directly benefits our aging population by ensuring independence and quality of life, whilst reducing long-term medical and social costs. Current treatment to monitor and prevent glaucoma-related blindness is by lowering IOP with eye-drops, laser therapy or surgery. This project directly benefits our aging population by ensuring independence and quality of life, whilst reducing long-term medical and social costs. By incorporating nanotechnology with ophthalmology we will provide an economic solution to long-term, reliable, home-monitoring of IOP. An implantable IOP sensor, will identify patients requiring more invasive treatment compared with those with less aggressive disease, leading to better health resource utilisation.Read moreRead less

Diamond cybernetics: nanocrystalline diamond for interfacing bionic devices with the human nervous system. Bionic devices will soon be used to treat disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's and depression. We will use diamond to create high resolution, permanent electrical connections between devices and the human nervous system. These diamond connections will preserve nerve health and make bionic devices more effective and able to last a lifetime.

The ability to conduct stable, high resolution recording and stimulation within the brain is critically important to the development of technologies that interface electronics with the human body. Devices that interface directly with the brain are increasingly important in brain research, medical monitoring, treatment of neurological diseases or the enormous increase in brain-machine interface technologies. Carbon Cybernetics have developed a high-density neural recording and stimulation array that employs fine carbon fibres as the electrode material. We aim to show that this array can record from the brain indefinitely, without loosing signal quality, and the same array can be used to stimulate the brain to recreate memories or sensations.Read moreRead less

Biology has ways of recognising when a foreign body is present, thus implanted devices need to be camouflaged from the body's immune system. Today's bionic devices fail because they are rapidly rejected. We will use the element of biology, carbon, to construct a new class of technology for future implants. Using a combination of permanent diamond and flexible carbon fibres we will create materials that are invisible to the immune system and last for decades.
