Superconducting cables can carry 100 to 200 times more electric current than conventional cables. The innovations in this program could enable the widespread commercialization of more efficient types of power generation, transmission, and electrical equipment and devices, offering tremendous energy savings and emissions reductions. It is estimated that ~A$400 million per year can be saved if high-Tc superconducting wires and cables were to replace conventional metallic conductors. The success of this program will greatly increase scientific understanding of hig-Tc superconductivity and expand Australia's knowledge in the research on high-Tc superconductors. The training will also provide scientific talents to the country.Read moreRead less

Knowledge of the detailed shape of the Fermi surface of a conducting material is vital for an understanding of its electrical and magnetic properties. We will use angle resolved photo-emission in conjunction with synchrotron radiation to explore the Fermi surfaces of technologically important magnetic alloys, the mechanism driving the occurance of charge density waaves in layer compounds and the electronic properties of wide band-gap semi-conductors such as GaN, SiC and of selected quasi crystals. These measurements will be performed using a unique high resolution toroidal spectrometer currently under construction at La Trobe university.Read moreRead less

This project will establish a comprehensive understanding of spin-dependent interactions and correlated behaviour of multi-electron systems that are responsible for spin-relaxation, spin transport and spin coherence in spin-electronic devices. Our approach is based on the spin-resolved two-electron coincidence spectroscopy that is inherently suited for studying electronic correlations. Systematic investigations of spin-dependent interactions in atoms, molecules and ultrathin films will increase understanding of magnetic (spin) properties of artificially structured materials with reduced dimensionality for the benefit of nanotechnology. This understanding will be used to design and control, at the quantum mechanical level, the building blocks of spin-electronic devices.Read moreRead less
Quantitative real-time imaging of high-temperature superconductors. This project will develop a robust technique for the quantitative real-time imaging of high-temperature superconductors. This project will develop a robust technique for the quantitative real-time imaging of high-temperature superconductors. The image-analysis algorithm so obtained will be a virtual software lens, which is able to decode the information contained in data obtained by a well-established but hitherto qualitative imaging technique. We will transform this technique into one uniquely capable of obtaining two-dimensional movies of the current distributions, magnetic fields, and pinning defects in superconducting films. Such a quantitative characterization of these key superconductor parameters will be an important tool in the present global quest for room-temperature superconductivity.Read moreRead less

Conventional electronics is based on coupling the charge of the electrons with external electric fields and light. Recent work on spintronics is directed toward the use of both the spin (angular momentum) and the charge degrees of freedom of the electron. We currently lead the world in the development of spin-resolved coincidence measurements, which make it possible to determine previously inaccessible nanoscale magnetic properties, central to 'spintronic structure engineering'. State-of-the-art instrumentation is requested to characterise the magnetic and crystallographic structure, the adsorbates, and the lateral distribution and depth profile of fabricated zero, one and two-dimensional structures.Read moreRead less

Australia is one of the world leaders in fundamental studies and implementation of quantum computing and quantum electromechanical systems. By developing a framework to quantify and control noise due to decoherence in such systems, this research will facilitate progress in the development and understanding of quantum computing and quantum electromechanical devices. The project will also significantly strengthen the general representation of research on decoherence, a field of crucial importance to many areas of theoretical and experimental physics, in Australia. Funding of this project will enable Australia to further expand its leading position in cutting-edge science and next-generation technology.

Two important directions of electronic application for MgB2 films are superconducting Josephson junction (JJ) technology and passive microwave devices. Superconducting JJ technology will have a small but important niche in high-performance digital signal and data processing applications for civilian, commercial, and military terrestrial, as well as space deployment. With superconducting passive microwave devices, the potentially largest market in this segment are filter systems for ground- or satellite based wireless communication systems. The research outcome could support Australian companies to develop corresponding products, as well as broaden Australia's knowledge of the physics of the new MgB2 superconductor.Read moreRead less
